Last season in this rivalry game, Peters Township defeated the Panthers 24-20, but this year Upper Saint Clair took down the Indians in a resounding 44-0 win.
Peters Township began the opening drive of the game at their own twenty yard line. After one run, the Indians dropped back to pass and fumbled the ball. It was recovered by Panthers defender Ryan Robbins. It didn’t take long for Upper Saint Clair to capitalize on that mistake. Running back John Banbury punched it in two yards out to open the scoring of the game. Peters Township followed with a quick three and out and gave the ball right back to Upper Saint Clair. USCHS drove down the field but the drive ended with a missed field goal. That left 5:52 on the first quarter clock with the score still 7-0. Down by only a score, the Indians gained one first down, but still punted the ball away after a third and one stop by the Upper Saint Clair defense. The Panther then followed with a drive that found Beckett Mayfield open on a thirty-eight yard connection from QB Josh Snyder. Once again, Peters Township was unable to stir together any offense and punted the ball away at the end of the first quarter.
The next drive by Upper Saint Clair ended in yet another touchdown, but this time it was Luca Coury punching it in from two yards out. Now with 8:50 left, the Indians found themselves down by 21. On the opening play of their next drive, the Panthers defense forced another fumble this time recovered by Sam Bunn at the Indians thirty-nine. Forty-one seconds after the last touchdown, USC scored yet again another rushing touchdown, this time from Snyder. The QB took it himself from fifteen yards out to put his team up by four touchdowns. Yet another three and out by the Peters Township offense gave the Panthers possession again and they once again pushed the ball down the field for a touchdown. With 4:23 left in the half, Coury found a hole from five yards out for his second score of the day. On the ensuing kickoff, the Indians found some life with a good return. The return put them at their opponents forty-five. They eventually got their way down to the eighteen, but another fumble ended that drive. Andrew Gaither had the recovery on the Indians third lost fumble of the night. The Indians defense was finally able to stop the Panthers offense, and the half ended with the score at 35-0.
With a running clock in the second half, the Panthers slowed down the game and only score one more touchdown the rest of the night. That touchdown came on the opening drive when Banbury got his second touchdown of the night from nine yards out. That drive took almost 5 minutes off the clock which set the pace for the night. The Peters Township offense took the field, but again they were shut down quickly and punted the ball away. Upper Saint Clair then took down the rest of the third quarter, and with about eleven minutes left in the game missed another field goal to give the Indians the ball. On the very next play, the snap went well over the QBs head and was recovered in the endzone for a safety. That gave the game a 44-0 score and gave the Panthers their last points of the game. Their next drive ended in yet again a missed field goal, and the Indians followed with a punt. Upper Saint Clair finished the game out with two runs.
Upper Saint Clair (6-0) travels to Bethel Park next Friday, and Peters Township (2-4) squares off against the Trinity Hillers.
