Valley West defeats West Scranton for first win of the season

The Spartans looked to establish the line of scrimmage and they went off and running. Malique Campbell had two rushing touchdowns and Damian Eastman threw and ran for another as Valley West defeated the Invaders 25-14 at Scranton Memorial Stadium. “I’m really excited for the kids. They’ve done such a great job in bringing the culture back.” Said Spartans head coach Brydon Rukstalis.

Valley West received the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive down the field as Damian Eastman found Gadgigas Reisinger from 37 yards out to make it 6-0 Spartans with 8:26 remaining in the first quarter. West Scranton got the ball for the first time and moved the ball down the field. Finishing the drive with Austin Sostre found Kazual Colbert from 21 yards out. The Invaders got the two point conversion to make it 8-6 with 5:54 left in the first quarter.

The Spartans took back the lead as Campbell scored from 45 yards out to make it 12-8 with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter. The Invaders drove into Valley West territory but Austin Sostre’s pass was intercepted by Jaheir Cooper-Mickens. The Spartans capitalized as Eastman scored from one yard out to make it 18-8 Valley West with 10:08 to go til halftime.
After both teams traded punts, West Scranton looked to score with 1:10 left. However Sostre’s pass was intercepted by Tanner Raguskas as we hit halftime.
The Invaders started the second half with the ball but went three and out. A fumble recovered by West Scranton gave the Invaders a chance deep in Spartan territory. However, Sostre’s pass fell incomplete on fourth down.
Valley West went on a 75 yard drive that ended with Campbell’s second touchdown of the night from 13 yards out to make it 25-8 Spartans with 45 seconds left.
West Scranton did cut the lead down as Austin Sostre went to Jonyae Sostre for a 22 yard touchdown to cut the lead down to 11 with 7:01 to go. Valley West ran out the clock on the final drive of the game as the Spartans got their first win with a 25-14 victory. The win ended an eight game losing streak for Valley West dating back to last year. The Spartans look to even their record next week as they host Hanover Area. The Invaders travel to Abington Heights.
