Lakeland gets big opening win over Wellsboro

Lakeland played a balanced game and showcased their dynamic offense in a 27-6 win over Wellsboro.  The game was a replacement game for Lakeland who originally had received a forfeit earlier in the week.  The Chiefs got 2 running TD’s from RB Evan Lonzinski and a rushing and passing TD from WR turned QB Jackson Pochas.

Wellsboro won the toss but deferred to the 2nd half.  Lakeland took the opening kickoff and executed a 14-play 77 yard drive that was capped when Pochas called his own number and took it down the right sideline for a 13-yard score.  With 4:04 left in the 1st quarter, the Chiefs had a 7-0 lead.

There were several exchanged possessions as the game headed into the 2nd quarter.  Lakeland then began a possession at their own 25 but Pochas fumbled the ball after a 10-yard gain and Wellsboro took over at the Lakeland 35.  3 plays later, Wellsboro QB Griffin Morral fumbled and Lakeland recovered at their own 47.  The Chiefs then executed a 7-play drive that ended with a Pochas to WR Jacob Passiment 27-yard score, and it was 13-0 Lakeland with 5:08 left in the 1st half.

Wellsboro was then able to get things going.  The Hornets executed a 12-play, penalty filled drive that got them on the board when Morral took it in from 1-yard out to make it 13-6 Lakeland at the half.

The 3rd quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to score and a lengthy injury delay.  Lakeland began a drive late in the 3rd quarter that continued into the 4th quarter, and it spanned 68 yards and 9 plays.  RB Evan Lonzinski was the recipient this time as he scored on a 19-yard run to make it 21-6 Lakeland with 7:58 left in the 4th quarter.

Wellsboro then had a 3-and-out and had a punt blocked which was recovered by Lakeland at their own 49.  The Chiefs then executed a nice 8-play drive covering 51 yards.  On the drive Lakeland WR Chase Rosenkrans caught 3 passes and became Lakeland’s all-time receiving leader with 137 receptions.  The drive ultimately ended with a 5-yard TD run from Lonzinski to make it 27-6 for Lakeland with 3:41 left in the 4th quarter.

Wellsboro had one final chance but on the first play on the ensuing drive Morral’s pass was intercepted by Lakeland’s Ashton Petrilak to seal the win for the Chiefs.  Lakeland is 1-0 and will head on the road next week to play 1-0 Lake Lehman.  Wellsboro dropped to 0-1 and will try to get back on track at home against Cowanesque Valley.
