One more week remains in the regular season, we had quite the shakeup in the rankings this week, including our first new number one team for the first time since week 6. One team dropped out of the rankings this week, that being Montoursville after their loss, and we have quite a few big time matchups coming up this week. With all of that said, let’s have a look at our rankings for week 9.
Mount Carmel takes their spot atop the rankings this week, after their 49-21 home victory over Central Mountain, but more importantly because of Shamokin’s first loss of the season. With a win over Southern Columbia, along with some other quality wins on their resume, it was only right for the Red Tornadoes to move up to number one. Their last matchup of the year is a big one, as they’ll take on #3 ranked Shamokin on the road in the Coal Bucket game.
Southern Columbia moves up to number two after their dominant 56-20 road victory over Jersey Shore last week. Not much else to say about this Tigers team other than they look ready to make another state title run, it will be interesting to see if they can take the number one seed in the District 4 2A bracket from Bloomsburg. Their last matchup of the regular season is a road contest against Selinsgrove.
Down goes number one, Shamokin fell to Blue Mountain on the road 34-14 in one of the most shocking losses of the season. More importantly for the Indians, quarterback Logan Steele went down late in the game with an injury to his non throwing arm, so Shamokin could be in trouble if that injury lingers into the playoffs. This week Shamokin plays the highly anticipated Coal Bucket game at home against #1 ranked Mount Carmel.
The Braves continue to cruise, now 8-1 after their 48-13 blowout win at home over Warrior Run. Shikellamy is going to be in an interesting situation going into the final week of the season, as they will have an opportunity at the number one seed in the District 4 4A playoffs if they win and Shamokin loses, despite losing to Shamokin earlier in the year. Their last regular season game is at home against Danville.
Bloomsburg crushed Danville at home last week, winning 41-8 to continue their undefeated streak. The Panthers are one win away from their first undefeated regular season in school history, but obviously the bigger question will be how will they match up with Southern Columbia if that contest comes to be. Their final game of the regular season will be at home against Northwest Area.
The Red Raiders set two new school records last week, scoring 84 points in an 84-14 win over North Penn-Mansfield which is a new school record, and setting a school record with 612 total rushing yards. Montgomery is currently sitting in the one spot in the District 4 1A playoff bracket, it’ll be interesting to see who gets the top spot between them and Line Mountain. Montgomery’s final game is on the road against Cowanesque Valley.
The Eagles shut out Juniata on the road last week 41-0, keeping the battle between them and Montgomery for the top spot neck and neck as we head into the final game of the regular season. Their last contest will be at home against Newport.
Troy moves up one spot to number eight after their 56-8 road win over Wyalusing, marking eight consecutive victories for the Trojans. Troy will likely enter the District 4 2A bracket as the 3 seed, with a first round matchup against Towanda or Warrior Run coming up on the horizon. Their final game of the regular season will be at home against Canton.
Mifflinburg jumps up a spot to number nine after a strong 21-7 home win over Montoursville, their sixth straight victory. The Wildcats currently sit at the number three spot in the District 4 3A playoff bracket, behind Athens and Mount Carmel, however there is a decent chance that Mifflinburg could jump up to the two spot after this week. Mifflinburg’s final regular season game will be on the road against Lewisburg.
Despite the victory, Athens falls two spots to number ten because of how much the offense struggled in a 9-0 victory over Muncy. Athens simply cannot perform like that in the playoffs or they will not go very far, the offense specifically needs to get back to its midseason form. They will try to do that at home this week against Sayre.
Williamsport lost last week to Hollidaysburg on the road by a final score of 41-34, why don’t they drop after the loss you may ask? The Millionaires went toe to toe with one of the strongest contenders in 5A, having a lead for most of the game as well, this team is for sure primed for a potentially deep playoff run in 2026. Their last game of the regular season will be at home against Wilkes-Barre.
The Mountaineers continue to show off their offensive firepower in a 49-6 blowout win at home against Wellsboro. South Williamsport currently sits at the four spot in the District 4 2A bracket, which is likely where they will finish, which means that if they make it out of the first round they will face the number one seed in the semifinals which the Mountaineers could have a better chance in that game than you might think, this will be a team to look out for in the district playoffs. South Williamsport closes out the regular season at Central Columbia.
Welcome Lewisburg into the rankings for the first time this season, after their 35-14 win over Milton, the Green Dragons are winners of five of their last seven games. Lewisburg has emerged as a potential dark horse candidate in the District 4 3A bracket, with a likely first round matchup against Montoursville, whether it is home or away is yet to be seen. Their final game of the regular season comes at home against #9 ranked Mifflinburg.
