It didn’t take long for Team Maryland to set the tone in the 2025 PSFCA Big 33 game. Evan Blouir, Tijuan Reed, Devon Cox and Davon Smith Jr began to gash the PA run defense on the first drive of the game and they never stopped, accumulating 316 yards on the ground to lead Maryland to a 42-21 win. This was the first Maryland win since a 9-6 victory in 2018. Maryland Head Coach Tom Abel wasn’t surprised at the outcome. I knew what we had maybe they didn’t” he said of the dominant win.
Maryland drove 80 yards after receiving the opening kickoff. Evan Blouir called his own number and ran the ball in from the one to put Maryland on the board. Zaydaan Faridi made it 7-0 with his first pat of the night.

Team PA started their first possession of the game on their 28. They Jy’Aire Walls hit Braden Reed for a quick 14 yard gain, Jabree Wallace-Coleman carried for 8 yards to the 50 and it looked like Team PA was ready to battle back. Unfortunately for PA, the Maryland defense was having none of that. Walls was swallowed up in the backfield and lost the ball. Five plays later King Jones hauled in a td from from Smith putting Maryland ahead 14-0 near the end of the first quarter. “We know that it’s a one-on-one game in man to man coverage, but the biggest thing was just making sure we minimize how many big plays we gave up and keep everything in front of us up up front and the whole line and the D line, I think that was the game changer for us” said Abel.
The woes continued for PA on their next drive. Madden Patrick was picked off by Anthony Redfern on a first down pass at the PA 36. Maryland couldn’t capitalize but the tone was set. It was going to be a long evening for the PA squad. After forcing PA to punt, it only took 2 plays for Maryland to expand to a 21-0 lead. Smith Jr ran right, changed direction and sprinted around the left side of the defense for a 30 yard td.

“We were able to pound the rock and that’s what we wanted to do” said Abel. “we wanted to be physical and take the fight to PA possession”. Team PA finally got things going offensively with a 5 play drive to make it 21-7 with 4:45 remaining in the first half. Patrick found Braden Reed for a 14 yard td pass. That was the first of two td passes for the Danville qb. “It was an honor. To play with people of this high caliber and represent the state of Pennsylvania was a blessing”.
Both teams exchanged punts on their next possessions respectively. Then, with just 1:35 left in the half on their own 12, Maryland running back Tijuan Reed squirted through the line and outran the entire PA defense for the 88 yard score.

Blouir scored on the first Maryland possession of the second half on a 7 yard run to make it a 35-7 lead. Patrick closed the gap to 35-14 when he found Dominic Diaz-Ellis streaking across the middle of the end zone from 24 yards out. Ellis made a circus catch as he went to the ground.

Early in the fourth quarter Walls found Ziyyon Bredell for a 78 yard td strike to complete the scoring for PA, but PA was never able to finish the comeback. Kendall Dorsey found Smith for a 5 yard td to close out the scoring in the game. “I’m super proud of our staff and these players” said Abel. They bought in. We started working right away went to work as soon as we lost last year. We worked on recruiting and building up and building that family environment. A lot of these kids right here, we we talked to them and wanted them to win from the moment we lost last year so it’s been a year coming and that feels great for the hard work of our staff and these kids who wanted to win so very very much. I think the biggest thing is here we were athletic but we are physical and we were family and we wanted to play together and we played for each other and that’s servant leadership right there. Those guys wanted to play and that’s something I’m super proud about”.
