PIAA 1A Championship: Bishop Guilfoyle 17, Clairton 0

December 10, 2016

(Photo by Tom Elling) From 2009 through 2012, the Clairton Bears had an undefeated run for the ages, winning over 60 games in a row and snagging four consecutive state titles.  The Clairton program is a pinnacle of success, and one that the rest of the state’s teams look to emulate. Recently, Bishop Guilfoyle’s been […]

PIAA 4A Championship: Cathedral Prep 27, Imhotep 20

December 9, 2016

(Photo by Tom Elling) The game was played on a cold day, and, as the fourth quarter began, it must have felt even colder for the Erie Cathedral Prep Ramblers. Given another shot at the Imhotep Charter Panthers, the team that had embarrassed them 40-3 in last year’s state championship game, Cathedral Prep found themselves […]

The Ruby Review: Week 4!

October 1, 2015

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s been a crazy week! You know how sometimes you take the snap, and turn to hand the ball off, but the running back’s on the wrong side, and your guard’s getting pushed back right into your face, so you have to spin, go the other way, and roll with whatever kind […]

Selinsgrove 45, Shikellamy 9 It’s always special when you get to return to your old stomping grounds and watch your alma mater play a football game. There’s just something about being in that stadium, with that track you ran laps on in gym class, with those bleachers you sat in as the team made your […]

The Ruby Review: 2015 Week 2

September 16, 2015

Due to the weather and a bit of a cold caused by playing softball in the rain, I only managed to get to one game this weekend. Don’t worry, Wyoming Seminary, you’ll get your time in the spotlight! Wyoming Valley West 30, Delaware Valley 6 Last year’s incarnation of this game, a Week 2 contest […]

The Ruby Review: 2015 Week 1

September 8, 2015

I made it to three games this week, so here’s the scoop on each of them! Berwick 34, Crestwood 14 Oh, how nervous I was, sitting at Berwick’s Crispin Field, as the Bulldogs and Crestwood Comets went to the locker rooms at halftime, tied 7-7. And how could I not be?! My professional (well, amateur) […]

The Ruby Review’s 2015 Preseason Preview

September 1, 2015

The high school football season is right around the corner, and that means the Ruby Review is back and better than ever! Last season’s column sort of petered out as the winter closed in and your possibly-handsome author learned a valuable lesson about the difficulties of balancing amateur sports journalism with a full-time job, but […]

Hey everyone. The Ruby Review took a week off for Thanksgiving, but I’m back and nearly as dedicated to covering the PIAA State Semifinals as I was to eating turkey and stuffing last week! Before I get into the two Quarterfinals games I saw, I’ll take a step back to an exciting Round of 16 […]

Week 12: Crestwood 35, Berwick 19; Bishop McDevitt 35, Manheim Central 10

November 20, 2014

Week 12 is in the books, and most of the District 2, 4 and 11 Champions have been crowned! It was not a good week to be undefeated, as 13 of the 29 zero-loss squads fell. Across the state, there were stunning upsets, dominating statements, and exciting finishes galore, and now the Ruby Review is […]

Ruby Review: Berwick 51, Scranton Prep 29; Bethlehem Catholic 55, Lehighton 18 + Week 12 Previews

November 12, 2014

Ruby Review Week 11: Berwick 51, Scranton Prep 29; Bethlehem Catholic 55, Lehighton 18 It was the coldest night of the half-over fall season. The thermometers read 36 and dropping, but with a stiff wind it felt like 26. It was the kind of night where you wished you had remembered your scarf, your gloves, […]

The Ruby Review: The Ruby PREVIEW! It’s Playoff Time!

The Ruby Review: The Ruby Preview It’s one of my absolute favorite times of the year! Ruby Review Week 9

October 28, 2014

It’s inevitable. Sometime around the middle of October, things change. We trade T-shirts for sweatshirts, soda for hot chocolate, and sneakers for boots. As the temperature drops and the days shorten, we brace ourselves. All across the state, high school football teams are bracing too. Some are bracing for another long winter and the cold […]

Ruby Review: Crestwood 28, Wyoming Valley West 14; Scranton Prep 28, Abington Heights 0

October 15, 2014

They should change Frank Aigeldinger’s name to Frank Aigel-Ding!Ding!Ding!-er, because whenever he touches the ball, Crestwood hits the jackpot. Now, that might have been the worst joke about anything ever, but I firmly believe the underlying sentiment: The Crestwood Comets have themselves a special player in #3. After his performance Friday night, I think that […]

Ruby Review: Troy 17, Wellsboro 0; Wyoming Valley West 38, Dallas 14

October 7, 2014

This past weekend, I made my longest trip of the year (119 miles each way to Wellsboro) and my shortest trip of the year (9 miles each way to Dallas). Indeed, the Wellsboro trip was a milestone in many ways; not only was it my longest trip of the year, and not only was it […]

Ruby Review: Mid-Season Mega-Post!!!

September 30, 2014

It’s been a fortnight since I’ve last put the pen to the page… er, well, the fingers to the keys… and since then I’ve seen five great games. Some were, we’ll charitably say, a little less great than others, but every high school football game is great in my book! Every year it amazes me […]

Ruby Review: Old Forge 16, Hanover Area 13; Parkland 35, Allentown Central Catholic 7

September 15, 2014

I got to see a little bit of everything this week. I saw some high octane offense and I saw some hard-hitting defense. I saw a winner with a roster size of nearly 80 and a winner with a roster size of 30. I saw a venerable football shrine featuring that increasingly unfamiliar holdover of […]

Ruby Review: Delaware Valley 43, Wyoming Valley West 35

September 8, 2014

If you had come up to me after the first quarter of this game, a slow, unremarkable first quarter that featured only a single touchdown, and told me that by the end of the night I would have witnessed one of the best high school football games I’d ever seen, I would have asked you […]
