Delaware Valley has no trouble with West Scranton

While it hasn’t necessarily been a typical season for Delaware Valley, as they came into their showdown with West Scranton at 2-6, there have been some signs of solid improvement.  West Scranton had a 3-5 record and the Invaders were coming off a huge Bell Game victory over rival Scranton.  With the Invaders celebrating Senior night, it seemed like a good opportunity for them to get a big win against what has been a solid program in the Warriors.

The Delaware Valley defense had other plans.

The Warrior defense played well in all phases, held the Invader passing game in check and dominated the line of scrimmage in getting a shutout as Delaware Valley dominated West Scranton 35-0.  Warrior RB Devin Estevez had 2 TD runs as the Delaware Valley offensive line opened holes all night for the Warriors.

West Scranton felt the pressure from the Warrior defense immediately on the initial possession of the game.  Invader QB Austin Sostre threw an interception that was returned 25 yards for a TD by DB Lucas Purdon, and Delaware Valley had a 7-0 lead with 10:09 still remaining in the 1st quarter.

The Warrior defense forced a quick 3-and-out from the Invaders on their next possession, and the Delaware Valley offensive line started to take over.  RB Devin Estevez had several big runs on the drive and capped it when he rumbled in from 5 yards out to give Delaware Valley a 14-0 lead with 6:55 still left in the 1st quarter.

Both teams traded possessions as the game moved into the 2nd quarter.  Delaware Valley then had a successful drive that ended with a 2-yard TD run by FB Dylan Bannon that gave Delaware Valley a 21-0 lead with 9:47 left in the half.

The Warrior defense then did their thing again, regaining possession near midfield.  Delaware Valley’s offense took full advantage when QB Leif-Erik Orby hit TE Cole Belcher who rolled 40 yards in for the score to make it 28-0 Delaware Valley with 6:24 left in the half.

A field position game then ensued for the remainder of the half as the Warriors were seeking the mercy rule but the Invaders fought it off.  Starting the 3rd quarter, Delaware Valley took the 2nd half kickoff and methodically moved downfield while draining almost 5 minutes off of the clock.  They scored when Estevez rumbled in from 8 yards out to give Delaware Valley a 35-0 lead.

The Warriors substituted in backups at that point and West Scranton did have some success in moving the ball, but with the running clock it was too late to make any headway and the Warrior defense kept the Invaders off the scoreboard and sealed the 35-0 win to give Head Coach Keith Olsommer his 200th career victory.  Both teams now have 3-6 records, and Delaware Valley will close out their regular season on the road at Abington Heights while West Scranton heads up to Moscow to face North Pocono.

After the game I had the opportunity to speak with RB Devin Estevez about the support by his teammates:
