McDowell 55, Erie 21

For a brief moment in the third quarter at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Erie Royals threatened to tear up the script. Armed with an aggressive playbook of fake punts and deep bombs, the underdog Royals clawed back from an early deficit to tie it 21-21. Then, Evan Kuhn and the McDowell Trojans reminded everyone exactly why they dominate District 10 Class 6A football. McDowell exploded for 34 unanswered points to close out the game, obliterating Erie 55-21 to capture yet another District 10 Class 6A championship. The Trojans, now 7-3, advance to face Altoona in the PIAA 6A subregional. Kuhn put on a clinic, scoring six touchdowns. The junior quarterback completed 20-of-30 passes for 229 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 46 rushing yards on 15 carries and an opening 2-yard touchdown run. Erie High shocked the Trojans on the very first play from scrimmage. Royals quarterback Jack Musone unleashed a spectacular 80-yard touchdown bomb to sophomore wideout Dyarren Woodard, giving Erie an instantaneous 7-0 lead. Woodard was a massive bright spot for the Royals, racking up 214 yards on seven receptions. Musone finished the night with 295 passing yards and two first-half scores. McDowell, however, did not panic. Kuhn led three consecutive scoring drives in the first quarter. He hit Penn State commit Deonte Flemings on a 15-yard slant for a score, and then flipped a screen pass to James Feronti, who outpaced the defense for a 33-yard touchdown to make it 21-7. Erie dug in deep before the break, using a fake punt to fuel a drive that ended with a 2-yard option toss from Musone to Marquis Leggett, cutting the lead to 21-14 at halftime. When Musone called his own number for a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, the Erie crowd erupted as the game drew level at 21-21. The tie lasted only until McDowell went on a relentless aerial counteroffensive, scoring twice in just 60 seconds. First, Kuhn hooked up with Feronti for a 7-yard strike to take the lead back. Moments later, after a quick defensive stop, Kuhn threw a 12-yard touchdown to Cash Hammond, extending the lead to 35-21. Just 21 seconds into the final frame, Kuhn scrambled right and found a wide-open Feronti again for a 22-yard touchdown. It capped a monstrous night for Feronti, who hauled in seven catches for 105 yards and three touchdowns. With the score at 42-21 and Erie driving late in a desperate bid to close the gap, McDowell defensive back A.J. Tarasovitch completely slammed the door shut. Tarasovitch jumped a goal-line pass and turned on the jets, returning the interception 98 yards for a pick-six touchdown. Remarkably, on the very next Erie drive, Tarasovitch duplicated the feat, intercepting another pass in the endzone and returning it a shorter distance for his second pick-six of the fourth quarter. By the final whistle, a tight third-quarter battle had turned into a 34-point blowout, sending the Trojans back to the postseason mountain.

Union-AC Valley 46, Sharpsville 28

Cambridge Springs 14, Lakeview 6

Cambridge Springs mounted a second-half comeback to defeat Lakeview 14-6, overcoming a 6-0 halftime deficit by shutting the Sailors down in the second half. The Blue Devils took their first lead late in the third quarter. Dale Smith capped off a driving possession with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. The subsequent extra point pushed Cambridge Springs ahead 7-6 with just 22 seconds remaining in the period. Lakeview responded with a threatening drive deep into the red zone, but the Cambridge Springs defense stood tall, forcing a critical turnover on downs. Capitalizing on the momentum, the Blue Devils marched the length of the field on the ensuing possession. Wyatt Keem punctuated the drive with a touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-6.
The Sailors had one final opportunity to tie the game as time expired. However, quarterback Luke Johnson’s desperate heave into the end zone fell incomplete. Johnson accounted for Lakeview’s lone touchdown of the night with an 11-yard touchdown run in the first half.

Reynolds 35, Northwestern 6

A first-half blitz propelled Reynolds to a dominant 35-6 win over Northwestern, fueled by an explosive opening quarter from its special teams and defense. Reynolds did all of its damage before halftime. Brady Nehlen opened the scoring with a 43-yard punt return. Moments later, Angel Minjarez intercepted a Northwestern pass and returned it for a touchdown from 35 yards out. Quarterback Connor Belback threw two touchdown passes, first finding Cason Connelly on a 13-yard strike before connecting with Minjarez—who capped off a stellar two-touchdown performance—on a 46-yard bomb. Nehlen then added his second score of the night, punishing the Northwestern front on a 10-yard touchdown run to cap off the first half. Northwestern broke the scoreless tie late in the fourth quarter when Trenton Runser punched in a 5-yard touchdown run.

Gavin Purdy started the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run, followed minutes later by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Heath Hohman to Austin Goth to complete a 71-yard drive. Wilmington cut the deficit to 14-7 late in the first quarter when Chase Mitcheltree scored on a 15-yard run. The teams traded scores through the second and third quarters. Purdy extended the Eagles’ lead to 21-7 with an 8-yard touchdown run, but Mitcheltree responded for the Greyhounds with a 1-yard touchdown run before halftime, making it 21-14. In the third quarter, Wilmington tied the game on a 14-yard touchdown run by Cael Kettering. Grove City quickly answered when Hohman found Levi Toth for a 48-yard touchdown pass, putting the Eagles ahead 28-21. The game reached a tense climax in the final two minutes. Trailing by seven, Wilmington ran a 15-play, 65-yard drive that chewed up nearly nine minutes of clock, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Mitcheltree with 1:13 remaining. The Greyhounds opted for a two-point conversion, which Mitcheltree successfully rushed in to give Wilmington a 29-28 lead. Grove City took over with 1:07 left and engineered a 7-play, 62-yard drive to set up Kelly for the game-winning kick as the final seconds ticked away. Hohman anchored the Grove City offense, completing 22 of 24 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Toth caught nine passes for 135 yards, while Goth recorded seven receptions for 86 yards, and Purdy added 71 rushing yards on 16 carries. A dominant fourth-quarter explosion propelled Fort LeBoeuf to a 27-0 shutout victory over North East in a non-region football clash on Friday night, October 30, at Carm Bonito Field.

The Bison offense finally broke the game wide open in the final frame, hanging 20 unanswered points on the Grapepickers. Meadville broke up the shutout in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Harrison Richards connected with Jamel Mitchell on a 44-yard touchdown pass, but it was too little, too late against a dominant Cathedral Prep performance.
