The Red Devils clinched their first win of the season in a statement-making game against the Pennwood Patriots.

Avongrove answered early in the first with a pick-six by Safety Trent Lucovich who took it 40 yards into the end zone.  No later than five minutes later, Pennwood capitalized with a 56-yard punt return touchdown by Jayon Hailey.

Pennwood would end up ahead 8-7 going into the second quarter.  The Red Devils did not panic, as they shut out The Patriots for the remainder of the game.

Unfortunately, Pennwood was plagued by mistakes throughout the game, they recorded a muff punt, low snaps, a high snap which caused a safety, you name it.

The Patriots Head Coach, Ato Troop expressed that regardless of their young, inexperienced team that Avongrove was the better team at the end of the day.

“They [Avongrove] played hard, they were prepared and I told my kids that they would be ready to play.  We have a lot of guys who is in their first ever varsity experience, I dovnot want to make that as an excuse but I want to Avongrove credit, they were ready to play,” said Troop.

“We have to recommit that football is our priority, take accountability and get better at the little things. There were a lot of plays that we could have made a play, but did not and I have been on both ends of these games.”

Avongrove’s defense was flying all around the place led by Ramsey Haartz who had three tackles for loss coming off his first home game from missing last season due to injury.

Red Devils QB Connor Walsh had three touchdowns through the air on the night and one was a 52-yard laser to Tommy Delgado.

Walsh who had a very solid game, emphasized more about his team play than his individual performance.

“Most importantly, it was just so much fun, I love being out here with these guys, we all love each other and will always be friends on and off the field, and i hope that we prove to a lot of people in this league that we a re going to win a lot of games this year,” said Walsh.

“We had a rough week last week and we do not think we played to our full potential, but this week everyone  came out with a lot of energy and set the momentum for the game”.

Throughout the game, The Red Devils had instilled their confidence and get the ball rolling from start to finish.

In his second year as head coach for the Red Devils, coach Joe Coffey has a resilient team with senior leadership, but also younger guys who can play and step up.

“I am excited by the leadership by our seniors and excited how our young guys got a chance to play and jump start their careers as varsity football players,” said coach Coffey.

“That [Pennwood] is a a great football team, Coach Troop has 17 plus Del-val champs and we haven’t had a 6A win in a long time, so it is a good win for our program”

Avongrove moves to 1-1 on the season and takes on Owen J. Roberts next Friday, as Pennwood loses their first game of the season and look to even the score with a hopeful win over William Penn next Saturday.
