It was another sloppy homecoming night, but with the West Chester East Vikings hosting the Sun Valley Vanguards. Both teams came into this game with the same record (2-4), with only one team able to advance in hopes of an up and coming playoff push. West Chester East Vikings take home a rainy homecoming win against the Vanguards 45-0.

The game started off slow, with the Vikings receiving the ball to start the first half. There wasn’t much going for either team in the 1st quarter as rain and wind started to pick up, making it difficult to throw the ball. After a couple of drives for both offenses, West Chester East started to find some rhythm in the run game heading into the 2nd quarter.

After a couple good runs from running back Coby Jaramillo, quarterback Nate Derosa started to heat up for the Vikings offense. Derosa escaped pressure and rolled to his right, where he found Tyler Wileczek down the sideline for a 58 yard play. Jaramillo finished the drive off with a 9 yard touchdown run up the middle to put the Vikings on the board for the first points of the game.

Noah Griffin returned the kick for the Vanguards and started with the ball on the twenty yard line where the Vikings led 7-0 with under eleven minutes to go in the quarter. The Vanguards offense struggled in the run game tonight with Alex Chappell shutting multiple plays down, coming downhill and filling gaps.

Sun Valley eventually punted the ball back, from there Coby Jaramillo started to get the offense moving again for the Vikings. Derosa did his thing, completing a couple passes but it came down to Jaramillo who scored another touchdown from the 3 yard line. Vikings had driven down the field and made it a 14-0 game with under six minutes to go in the half.

Down 14 with time ticking in the quarter, the Vanguards converted to their passing game and tried to get Josh Yanonis more involved. Sharrer completed multiple passes on the drive and got the Vanguards into Vikings territory. After an under pressure throw, safety Kyle Keefe for the Vikings defense came up big and intercepted Sharrer on the sideline.

The Vikings offense immediately went into their no huddle offense completing passes and getting out of bounds. Eventually, they were stopped short of the marker and the Vanguards made it 4th and 2 with ten seconds remaining. The Vikings went for it and converted with Jaramillo carrying defenders on his back for the 1st down, a timeout was quickly taken and a field goal was made before heading into halftime.

The Vanguards started with the ball in the 3rd quarter down 17-0, knowing passing the ball was the quickest way to put points on the board. West Chester East was ready for this however, dropping everyone back and forcing Sharrer to step up in the pocket and run.Sharrer eventually took off and had the ball punched out of his arm where Coby Jaramillo recovered inside Vanguard territory.

Vikings offense quickly capitalized on this turnover and had Jaramillo punch in his 3rd touchdown of the game, leading the Vanguards 24-0 with under 10 minutes to go in the quarter. Sun Valley’s offense started to warm up again after getting the ball back, with Sharrer spreading the ball around to all his weapons. However, it didn’t take long for the Vikings defense to make a stop on 4th down forcing a turnover on downs.

Quarterback Nate Derosa started to break off a couple good runs himself before leading his offense in Vanguard territory once again. With under four minutes to go in the 3rd quarter Derosa found his man Wileczek once again on a screen pass who broke off to the outside and scored a 16 yard touchdown.

The Vanguards continued to air the ball out after getting it back as time came to an end in the 3rd quarter. Sun Valley tried their luck on 4th down again in the beginning of the 4th quarter, but came up short with an incomplete pass intended for Yanonis.

Vikings took over again, keeping the ball on the ground and trying to run time out. That was until running backs Coby Jaramillo and Luis Rivera picked up first down after first down. Rivera ended the Vikings drive with a 1 yard touchdown run into the endzone, putting West Chester East up 38-0.

Sun Valley stuck with their gameplanning after getting the ball back, trying to quickly move down the field. It seemed like the offense had come alive in the 4th quarter, where the Vanguards came all the way down to the 10 yard line and decided to pass again. This time there was nowhere to go, Sharrer tried to find Yanonis over the middle but Kyle Keffe undercut the pass in the endzone and rallied his way down the field for a 100 yard pick six.

West Chester East Vikings held up in the final seconds against the Sun Valley Vanguards and took home a win on homecoming night, 45-0.

Running back Cory Jaramillo for the West Chester East Vikings, who ran for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense to pair with 4 tackles and a fumble recovery on defense stated after the game that, “ This is 100% a momentum builder game for us, we know we have four straight winnable games and we just got one of them. Being the senior I am now, I have to give my all for the rest of these games “.

Linebacker Ryan Creegan for the Sun Valley Vanguards, who combined for over 10 tackles says that, “ We just need to have short term memory, just forget about what happened and move onto the next, We still have games left to play. We can’t be worried about the past, just have to focus on the next opponent and finish the season off on a high note “.

Both teams travel away next week with West Chester East Vikings facing Kennett, while Sun Valley takes on Rustin.
