EXTON: Entering Saturday night Chest Mont League cross over contest the West Chester East Vikings and Downingtown East Cougars came in undefeated. What ensure on the turf of Kottmeyer stadium was a heavyweight fight that came down to red zone stop in the game’s final seconds that gave the host Cougars the come from behind 24-19 victory in a game that saw both throw their bodies around and hit anything that moved like the glory days of football

In the Vikings corner you had Sr RB Kyle Cichanowsky. He entered the contest averaging over 200 yards per game. The Cougars “contained” Cichanowsky if you will holding him to 194 yards on 25 carries. That total was his the lowest this season in which he played the whole game.

In the Cougars corner you had the trio of backs Spencer Uggla, Stanley Bryant and Josh Asante.  Uggla, Bryant and Asante combined to rush for 309 yards.  James Voss, Caelan Krasley, Keanu Yazdjerd, Julian Craig and Donovan Mitchell paved the way up front for Uggla Bryant and Asante. Post-game Uggla who led the trio with 140 hard fought yards on 21 carries gave credit to his boys up front saying “They are stronger then anyone out here, We trust them with anything.”

WCE appeared poised to take the games opening drive to endzone driving down to the Vikings 24 yard-line before being stopped on downs. Three plays later Cichanowsky broke through the Cougars defense and raced his way 71 yards for the touchdown that gave the Vikings the early 7-0 lead. Downingtown would respond with a 28-yard touchdown run by Uggla with 2:15 left in the first. The extra point was blocked and the Vikings held on to 7-6 lead. The Vikings would extend their lead to 13-6 in the second quarter with a 11 play 88 yard drive that was capped with Ryan Duell to Conlin Warner touchdown pass from 15-yards out.

The Cougars came out of the locker room in the second half firing on all cylinders. On the first drive of the half they blocked a Vikings punt which they recovered on the Vikings 29-yard line. Four plays later Bryant plunged his way in from two yards out.

On the ensuing Vikings drive Cichanowsky fumbled and Garrett Gripton recovered the ball for the Cougars at the Vikings 17-yard line. Five plays Connor Noble bulled his way in from a yard out giving the Cougars their first lead of the game at 18-13 with 6:54 left in the 3rd. The Cougars lead was short lived has on the fifth play of the ensuing Viking drive Cichanowsky once again got free and galloped 59 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Vikings held the 19-18 lead.

The Downingtown would come right back and take 24-19 lead when Andrew Person connected with Matt Glazer for a two-yard touchdown pass that capped a 14 play 61- yard drive. The Vikings defense set up the late game drama by stuffing Asante on a 4 & 1 at their 20-yard line. WCE would then drive all the way down to Cougars 6 yard-line with a good balance of Duell arm and Cichanowsky run. Duell came up huge with a 14-yard pass to Cichanowsky on a 3 & 4 and then again with a 25 completion to John Wileczek on a 4&4 from the Cougars 31 with under minute left that made it appear as if the Vikings were going to come away with the road victory but it wasn’t meant to be has on fourth and goal Duell couldn’t connect with Wileczek on a slant pattern that sealed the victory for the Cougars.

The Vikings will look to bounce back when they host cross-town rival West Chester Henderson on Friday night, the Cougars face another Chest Mont cross-over game when they travel to Malvern to take Great Valley.
