(Collegeville, PA) The best thing about high school football in week one is that every team has high expectations.  Downingtown West coming off a subpar 2017 had high hopes due to a good group core group of veterans.  A confident Perkioman Valley squad was a playoff team last year and dominated the Whippets in last years matchup. In a very entertaining back and forth affair Downingtown West beat Perkioman Valley 44-33.

A very pleased Downingtown West Head Coach Mike Milano said after the game “I am extremely proud of our kids”   “We can be really explosive on offense, but we have some work to do on defense” Milano had high praise for the Perkioman Valley squad  “That’s a 9-10 win football team, great skill kids, they got some dudes over there.”

Cole Peterlin of Perkioman Valley was the star of the game despite the loss.  Cole had four TD passes and led the Vikings ground attack.  Dan Byrnes was a force for Downingtown West.  Dan’s two long catch and run TD receptions were a deciding factor in the win.

Perkioman Valley took the opening kick and moved right down the field.  QB Cole Perterlin who was Mr. Everything on offense for PV powered in from the eight to make it 7-0 at the 9:55 mark of the opening quarter.  Downingtown West first possession was a quick one.  QB Will Howard dumped a pass just over the line to Dan Byrnes.  Byrnes snaked his way through the Defense 42 yards to pay dirt.  7-7 at the 7:27 mark.  PV answered right back.  QB Perterlin guided the Vikes to the end zone once again.  His pass to Doug Lingo got it to 13-7.  The Whippets answered quickly again and it was the Byrnes once again with the key play.  Dan’s huge catch and run on a broken play set up a Tyriq Lewis TD dive.  With the extra point, Downingtown West  led 14-13 after one.

With the first quarter being an up and down quarter you would expect the second to follow suit right? Wrong.  Both D’s dug in their heels.  Neither team made much headway and we went to the break Whippets 14 Vikings 13.

The Whippets opening drive of the second half got the offensive momentum of the game going again.  QB Will Howard dove across at the 10:21 mark to get it to 21-13 Whippets.  PV would have none of that.  QB Perterlin hit his favorite target Isaiah Domine on a 4th down from the 13 for a score.  21-19 Whippets after a missed two point attempt.  Tariq Lewis dove across on the next Downingtown possession and it was 27-19 Whippets.  Perlin and the Vikings answered.  A sweet 33 yard TD hookup and

two pointer to his man Isaiah Domine tied the score at 27 and sent the PV crowd into a frenzy.  We were tied at 27 with 4:40 in quarter 3.  A Spencer Machulski field goal closed out a wild third quarter and gave Downintown West a 30-27 advantage over Perk Valley.

The Vikings answered the field goal with a time consuming fourth quarter drive.  Peterlin to Domine again this time in the back corner of the end zone gave the lead back to Perk Valley 33-30 with 7:18 left.  Will Howard and the Whippets then just got back to business.  Will cooley leading his team down the field.  The game winning TD came from a Tariq Lewis dive into the end zone.  37-33 Whippets with 2:46 to go.  West iced the contest on a pick six by Alex Rosano and our final was Downingtown West 44 Perkioman Valley 33.
