DOWNINGTOWN: After giving up 35 points to cross-town rival Downingtown East the Downingtown West Whippets defense was left with a bad taste in their mouths. Fortunately for the Whippets, the defense came back to practice with little extra fire under them and it showed on Saturday as the defense propelled the 6th-seeded Whippets to a 17-0 over the 11th-seed Council Rock South Golden Hawks Saturday night at Walter E Kottmeyer Stadium.

“That definitely hurt we remember that feeling of losing but all we gotta do is come back stronger each week.” Sr OLB Ryan Campbell a University of Richmond commit said adding that “We were really mad from the game, and we just had a great week of practice and I think that’s why we came out and won this game.

Campbell went further calling the week leading up to Saturday the greatest week of practice in his Whippet career.

In total, the Whippet defense held the Golden Hawks offense to a mere 18 yards rushing and a total of 116 yards and sacked Golden Hawks QB Chase Ennis four times.

With an effort like that Whippet head coach Mike Milano knew exactly where to give credit saying “The kids played their hearts out, we tackled well.” Adding that “Our defense was the star of the game tonight.”

The Golden Hawks started the game off with a bang as on the first play from scrimmage Ennis connected with Chase Myers for a 40-yard gain on their way to driving down to the DTW 23 before their drive stalled resulting in a turnover on downs.

Quinn Henicle got the scoring started with his 10-yard keeper for the lone score of the first half.

The game remained at 7-0 until Ben Mehan connected on a 33-yard field goal with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter. The Whippets put the icing on the victory with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Henicle to Dean Hangey.

With the win the Whippets will now head on the road and face the 3rd seed and undefeated Souderton Friday night at 7 pm.
