After two days of hard rain, the skies opened ups and brought 40 degree temperatures and winds, perfect for football. However, tonight would be raining Garnet Valley as they would go on to beat Conestoga in swift fashion 68-6. These are the most points scored for Garnet Valley in a game in more than a decade. Last year, they beat Penncrest 63-0, so this game would make this their new high. Offensively, this was one of their best nights historically as they kept pushing the ball up and down the field with their powerful offense. Conestoga had some fireworks early that made it 7-6 Garnet Valley in the 1st quarter. However, that would be the first and only time they would put up points. Lets go into a deeper dive of each team’s night. . .

Garnet Valley overall had a very, very good night of Friday night football. Shane Reynolds, Sean Gallagher, and Kevin McGarrey had MVP nights for Garnet Valley. Shane Reynolds had three touchdowns overall with over 100 yards in just the 1st quarter. Then, Sean Gallagher had three touchdowns in total as well. Two were on passes and one was on a kickoff return. Kevin McGarrey had two touchdown passes with over 100 passing yards in just the 1st half. However, that entire offense played a huge role in Garnet Valley putting up 68 points. Then, on the defensive side of the ball, they were equally as good. They were constantly harassing Mike Costigan, the Conestoga quarterback, in the backfield and caused two fumbles which one was returned for a pick six. Alex Nicolaides had the strip sack fumbles as well as another sack to.

Conestoga did not have their best night on either side of the ball. The one highlight that they had on offense is the 98 yard pass from Mike Costigan to Peter Detwiler in the first quarter. However, that was one of the few positive that happened on offense for the Pioneers. The offense for the Pioneers was not able to move the ball very much due to constant pressure from Garnet Valley. But, the quick RPO offense tonight for them had some effectiveness to it as the game went on. So, a nice adjustment and credit to that Conestoga offense. On defense for them, they have some work to do. The one highlight they had was stopping Garnet Valley in the red zone. But, Garnet Valley’s dominant offensive line really set the tone. The defense for them could not stop the run for most of the night. However, the Conestoga defense started to make adjustments and slowed Garnet Valley down some.

Regardless of the score, both teams fought long and hard in this game and each deserves a pat on the back. Garnet Valley will be playing away next week against Upper Darby who is currently sitting at 0-2 and coming off a loss to Ridley. Conestoga will be looking for their first win of the year next week at home against Lower Merion, who is currently sitting at 0-2 as well. As the Central League 6A standings are now, Garnet Valley, Haverford, and Ridley are all tied for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place while Lower Merion and Conestoga are tied for 4th and 5th place. However, these standings could change at any time because there are still there games left in the year.
