2020 Garnet Valley Football Team

Tonight marked the first week of games for the Central League. There was a lot of excitement not just from Garnet Valley and Lower Merion, but from all of the other schools too. But tonight at Moe DeFrank, it was all Garnet Valley tonight. Both teams had a lot of offer but Garnet Valley pulled out the win in the end by a final score of 42-6. Garnet Valley has not lost to a Central League game in two years. That streak lives on tonight. Garnet Valley got off to a fast start and never looked back. Lower Merion had a first year head coach as well as a new offensive line coach. The Aces got off to a rocky start but have four games to righten the ship. They have quite a bit off talent on that team based on what was seen tonight.

Garnet Valley scored three touchdowns in each of the 1st and 2nd quarters. It started off with a Shane Reynolds run on the very first offensive play of the season. Then, Kevin McGarrey threw a touchdown to Sean Gallagher. The offense tonight looked like it was a machine for Garnet Valley as they scored all 42 points in the first half. As good as their offense was, their defense preformed equally as well. They had constant pressure in the backfield and they did not allow a Lower Merion score until there was a little under 2:30 in the 4th quarter. This preformance included one pick six by Will Wreznewski.

Lower Merion overall had a game in which there is certain things they need to improve on. Their offense did not look very good tonight as they had a good amount of three and outs and had trouble moving the ball downfield. However, in the second half of the game they did make a few adjustments and were able to get on the board on a one yard run by Jay Zheng. They have a lot of quickness on their offense from what they displayed tonight on the field. Their defense also did not have a great night. Garnet Valley was able to get quick strikes with big chunk plays. But, in the second half, they did not allow a single point and got Garnet Valley to fumble twice. This does not happen very often. So, some good plays there too.

Garnet Valley next week will play Conestoga at home on Friday night at seven next week. Lower Merion next week will play Haverford at home on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Overall a well fought battle between both teams as it was great to see a Central League game played after about a 14 month hiatus for them. Garnet Valley is looking to three peat as Central League champions while Lower Merion is looking to make some noise after going 0-10 the year before. No matter the result tonight, it was great to see high school football in the Central League once again.
