Whippet footballs DE/TE Sean Pelkisson’s recruitment has been fun to watch to say the least.  After his first offer, Youngstown St, came in early March, they starting coming in nearly one a week.  Who can blame schools like RMU, Holy Cross, UMass and Citadell?  I mean, the 6-3, 220 incoming senior is one very versatile player. He’s a great blocking TE. No doubt.

But it’s from the defensive end that Pelkisson excels. He plays mean, angry and with purpose, gets in the backfield quickly, almost like the offensive line is just “in his way”.

Enter social media. “Coach Foster found me on twitter and showed Coach Dodge and the head coach Lunsford” said Pelkison of how the GA visit came about. Foster liked what he saw and badgered the incoming senior into a visit. It was that visit to Georgia Southern 10 days ago that got his attention.  More so than any other school.  Today, Sean committed to the Eagles and announced it via twitter:

We caught up with Sean and asked him about the process and his decision:

PFN: How long have you played football?

Sean: I have been playing football since I was 5 years old.

PFN: Why did you choose to commit to the GS?

Sean: I chose to commit to GS because I really liked the coaches, the team, the culture and the overall vibe I felt when I was there. I was given the advice to go to the school that really wanted me and GS showed me that.

PFN: Why commit early?

Sean: It felt right and now I can really focus on my team and our senior season. We set goals as a team and now I can really focus on making those goals a reality.

PFN: Who was your biggest influence at GS, who recruited you?

Sean: Coach Lunsford really has a great thing going. He shared with me and my family about being a GS man and joining the brotherhood. Coach Foster originally found me on twitter and connected with us and then I connected with Coach Dodge as well.

PFN: What are they getting in player like you?

Sean: I’m a hard working, blue collar kid. I come to practice and workouts and get it done. I try my absolute hardest to out work my opponents and get it done for my team. They will get maximum effort in every rep!

PFN: What was the recruiting process like for you?

Sean: The recruiting process is hard to explain. I played QB until 9th grade, so my first year on varsity I was made a DE and had a lot to learn. I spent my whole off-season prepping for junior year. I kind of peaked after my junior year and over the winter with all my workouts. It started off slower for me and then kind of took off all at once. People have said not to commit and wait it out, but this just felt right. I’d tell others not to compare their recruiting journey to anyone else’s and try to enjoy it.

PFN: What position were you recruited for?

Sean: I was recruited at DE, TE and LB

PFN: Do you know what you’d like to study?

Sean: I’m trying to decided between Kinesiology or Sports Psychology

PFN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the GS program?

Sean: I’m pumped about the culture Coach has built and that it’s an up and coming program that I can hopefully make a big impact on.

PFN: Tell everyone out there in GSU something they’d never know about you until you told them:

Sean: Reese’s are my absolute favorite candy!

PFN: Who is the person who most influenced you in your football career?

Sean: My mother honestly. She was a college athlete and she has never left my side ever in my pursuit of a college football career. She believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself and when everyone said I was too short or too slow she just told me to put my head down and keep working. If I hadn’t listened to her I wouldn’t be here. I wish everyone could experience this kind of support.

PFN: What is it you’d like all your high school team mates and fans to know about your decision that you might have a hard time saying in person?

Sean: I’m just thankful to everyone for their support. I have traveled to ton of camps and college visits, trainings and workouts so I have missed stuff at school. My teammates hold it down and keep supporting me and pushing me to be my best. I just can’t wait to get out on the field with my team this year and bring home every W we can for the Downingtown community.
