Lawson Tyler
QB
Upper Dublin
6’5” – 200 lbs
Class of 2027
Committed to Holy Cross
When Brett Stover says a guy is one of the best quarterbacks he’s ever coached, that should be enough to seal the deal for any college staff. Stover has coached some very good signal callers. Recently Collin O’Sullivan went to Rutgers after having a great career at UD. Add in that 4.0 GPA and Lawson can write his own ticket. As a junior he threw for over 1,800 yards and 13 tds. At the end of May, Lawson ended his recruitment by announcing his commitment to Holy Cross, choosing the Crusaders over 12 others including Albany, Monmouth, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Stony Brook and more.
Stover says “Lawson is dedicated to his craft. Has really transformed his body into a QB. Had to really work on his footwork since he has grown so much. He’s a great leader on field, in the weight room, classroom and hallways
First to arrive last to leave. Coordinates throwing with receivers outside of normal workouts. Have to get him to stop sometimes because he just loves the game but has to find that happy median.
Wants to be the best and his ceiling is still yet to be reached. Excited for him, his family and his grandfather Dr paul winters who is on my staff and has been with me since 2014 when he joined my staff to help coach my son Ryan. What a cool situation it is to sit front and center to watch the show”.
“I’ve coached some great QBs in my time at UD Sover, O’Sullivan, Slivka, Derr, Giannetti & Moyer. He has an opportunity to join the conversation with this prestigious group”.
We caught up with Lawson to find out why he chose Holy Cross and who he is as a teammate and person:
PFN: Why did you choose to commit to the Crusaders before your Sr season?
From the first time I stepped on campus it felt like it was home for me, so when they offered me in May, I knew it was the place for me. I didn’t want to be going through the recruiting process during my senior season and wanted to be able to focus on getting to work with my high school teammates. Ultimately it was a no brainer to choose Holy Cross.
PFN: Who was your biggest influence there. , who recruited you?
The first coach to notice me was Coach Daddona, who recruits this area. But after that it was a collective of coaches who sold it for me, Coach Curran is a great leader of men and someone I wanted to follow behind, Coach Elliot is a great QB coach with a lot of experience playing the position, someone who I felt I could learn a lot from, Coach Schell’s scheme that he’s built over his time at other schools was also a big selling point for me. And then the rest of the overall staff, you could see from the first time I was there that it was a family.
PFN: What are they getting in player like you?
They are getting someone who is going to come in and work hard from day one and who just loves the game.
PFN: What was the recruiting process like for you?
The recruiting process was later for me I felt like, but once it got started it got going. I picked up my first offer 2 offers in back to back days at the end of January. And then from there it got rolling throughout the spring time, my teammates and I where working out for colleges in the morning before school and by the end of that, I ended up with 12 offers, from a bunch of great schools and football programs. I had planned to take a couple official visits in June but I felt like holy cross was the right spot for me so I just pulled the trigger and made my decision.
PFN: Do you know what you’d like to study?
Business and possibly some pre law.
PFN: What role did your parents play in your decision?
My parents were the biggest support system for me throughout the process, but they never put pressure on me or swayed me one way or another. Obviously they had their opinions on schools and we talked it all through, but they always wanted it to be my decision and I really appreciated that. The recruiting process was stressful, but both my parents always reminded me that this is what I dreamed of and have been waiting for, they made sure I didn’t take it for granted. Their support throughout the process was great and there is no way I would be where I’m at without the support from them.
PFN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the program?
The culture of the whole program, everybody is so bought in to bringing winning patriot league championships on the regular back to holy cross. From all the coaches, players, staff, alumni, evertbody is bought in and trending in the same direction.
PFN: What are you most looking forward to while playing for them?
My teammates. Part of the reason why I love football is because its a team sport and I’ve met some of my best friends through football, I love going out and playing with my best friends and I can’t wait to do that at holy cross with the guys in my recruiting class that I have already made connections with and all the other teammates Im going to.
PFN: Tell everyone out there in the football world something they’d never know about you until you told them:
Quarterback wasn’t my position until fairly recent, I started playing quarterback in around 6th/7th grade, I always liked football and played it my whole life at positions like linebacker, but once I started playing QB is really when I fell in love with the game.
PFN: Who is the person who most influenced you in your football career?
There have been so many influential people in my football career and not one more than another, but one that has had one of the biggest impacts is my grandpa. Paul Winters, he was a great player himself and a great coach too, now my high school coach. I think he always wanted me to play quarterback but he was never going to push me to be one, but as soon as I told him it was what I wanted he pushed me to be as best as I could be, he never made me work hard, but if I call him and want to work he is going to be there every single time. It could be the dead of winter and snowing and I could call him and we would go shovel space in a parking lot, just to throw, because we both just love it so much and love doing it together. The best part is when we are done working, he is going to be my grandfather and love me outside of football, its been a pretty cool experience and I’ve loved doing it with him.
Why do you play football?
I play football because I love everything about it, I love the team aspect of it, I love the competitiveness, I love all of it, and I think that’s the biggest thing is that whether its practice or a game it always just feels like the childhood game I fell in love with because I have so much fun doing it.
What would you do to improve the recruiting process?
I think there should be no dead periods in recruiting, I think coaches should be able to come see players workout whenever they want and I think players should be able to go visit schools whenever they want.
PFN: What is it you’d like all your high school teammates and fans to know about your decision that you might have a hard time saying in person?
I don’t really have anything that I want them to know that I have a hard time saying in person, but I think the biggest question I got after committing from people was why I didn’t wait until after my senior season, and my answer is that I felt like holy cross was home for me and I wanted to be able to focus on on having the best senior season with my teammates that I can.
What are your goals for this coming season?
My goals for my senior season are to win our league and district championship, but before that just be 1-0 every week, starting with week 1 with our rivals Wissahickon.
Tell everyone why you think football is good for a community
I think football is good for a community because it brings people together, whether it is bringing people together on the team, or just bringing the whole community together to come to a game on Friday night and share an interest, and even if your not interested in the football, but are maybe interested in band, it still brings everyone together.
what is your favorite pregame ritual?
I don’t really have any pre game rituals, but my pre game routine is just to get a hoagie from Wawa, and get to the school pretty early because I don’t like feeling rushed.
Music of choice:
Country
What is your favorite vacation destination?
I like Turks and Caicos.
