Who needs a QB when you can just run the ball on every down? PW showed that only throwing the ball one time for a fourteen-yard touchdown in the third. Roman Catholic transfer Everett Baker made a name for himself with 164 rushing yards on only 5 carries in the entire game and four touchdowns — one of which was a 70-yard punt return– Baker is putting the district on notice before the playoffs start coming around in only two weeks.

“Just executing, I wanna thank my line, they set me up picked up blocks and my receivers helped me out, and just you know, executed” Said Baker.

“A lot of times we go into a game thinking ‘You know we wanna control the line of scrimmage, we wanna run the ball and if we arent going to get stopped running the ball we’re gonna do it” Said PW Coach Dan Change

The first half was a tested battle for both teams. Each team scored on their opening drive with very little difficulty. For Wissahickon, QB Nolan Pounds and RB Quasir Sampson each had a great first half. Pounds went 10/11 in the first with 132 passing yards and a touchdown to boot. One mistake came in the first drive with an endzone pick, but offsetting penalties gave Wiss a second chance to get the ball in the endzone. Sampson had a chance to get into the endzone and continue his excellent Freshman year. Sampson ended the first half with 14 carries for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wissahickon has faced many challenges recently with multiple players going out with injuries, most of them season-ending. Coach Graver has still found a way to keep the offense hot and continue to score.

“I mean, they’re a really good football team. Offensively, Coach Graver has them going. they put you in binds, they execute, they got some athletes out there, and we were reeling a little bit there trying to figure out how to stop them. We made some adjustments at halftime, slight things that kind of helped us in that second half. Really proud of our guys executing in that second half. Said Chang.

The first half of PW was nothing but great also. Luke Winterbottom (48), Nayze Boggs (83), and Baker (105) combined for 236 rushing yards in the first half and four touchdowns. Running the ball on every play with read options, triple options, counters, and whatever run you can think of PW most likely did it. While Baker was the main spotlight, Winterbottom and Boggs each contributed in big ways. Winterbottom didn’t find the endzone until the second half of the game but still couldn’t be stopped. 7 carries for 48 yards averaging a rounded 6.9 yards per carry. Boggs totaled two touchdowns in only seven carries on his 83 rushing yards in the first half. Agile, Quick, Physical, PW checks all the boxes.

The second half was all PW outscoring Wissahickon 28-7. Little mistakes and dropped passes were the difference-makers between scoring and needing to give the ball right back. Baker had two touchdowns in the second half, his lone 59-yard carry and his punt return touchdown. The other key contributors came from Winterbottom with a 5-yard carry, and the one pass that went to Marcus Laffredo from QB Caiden Leszczynski for 14 yards. With the 56-28 win, Wissahickon stays at 14 in the rankings and needs a win against Cheltenham to solidify their spot in the playoffs. As for PW, they stand at the four seed in 5A looking forward to their last matchup of the year against Upper Moreland before they go right back to playoffs.

“They’re (Cheltenham) going to be a huge challenge, they’re a really good football team so we need to be prepared and ready to go, and we look forward to the opportunity” Said Wissahickon Coach Rory Graver

“I think the most important thing is we never look ahead so it’s always one game at a time, it’s process over outcome so we’re going to have a great week of practice and then we got to give it the best effort against Cheltenham” Said Graver when asked about playoffs.

“Playoffs is a whole new season, and every week competion gets tougher and tougher so we’re excited to try to build on what we’ve done in the past, and excited for the potential of these guys to see what we can do” Said Chang.
