Plymouth Whitemarsh had already sealed at least a share of the Suburban One American League title before Friday, thanks to a big 31-28 win against Upper Moreland last week. The Colonials didn’t mess around, defeating Wissahickon 54-7 for their biggest win of the season.

Like I told our guys, we earned it, they’ve been working their buts off all year and I’m happy for them,” said P.W Head Coach Dan Chang. “These guys since they were young have been through a ton.” He added.

The Trojans wasn’t the only thing that stood in between them and sole possession of their first title since 2016, the Colonials also had to power through some tough weather.

The forecast called for nasty weather, causing plenty of postponements for games across the area. By the time kickoff rolled around, it was clear that the elements were going to be a huge factor in this football game. The saying “Football Weather” is often thrown around when it starts to get colder out and the playoffs start to approach, but this is something you would call “Extreme Football Weather”.

To say that it was wet would be an understatement. It was pouring rain and the wind was howling, with gusts as big as 40 miles per hour, which coming into the game both teams knew would be a factor. But with P.W having a heavy rushing attack and Wissahickon having a heavy passing attack, it was clear which team was going to be more effected by the tough conditions.

Plymouth Whitemarsh was dominant right from the get-go, forcing the Trojans into a three and out on their first drive. The Colonials didn’t look back from there, scoring touchdowns on 7 of their first 8 possessions in the game, leading 47-0 at half time.

P.W’s triple option offense gave Wissahickon fits, with the Colonials getting big gain after big gain on each play. The Colonials executed their offense well, with minimal mistakes and it didn’t seem like the conditions got to them. Despite the ball being wet and it being easy to mishandle it, the Colonials only turned the ball over once, compared to the Trojans 3.

Description automatically generated with medium confidenceIn a triple option look where there’s a lot of reads to make in a short amount of time, but P.W Quarterback Aidan O’Brien did a great job of running the offense.

“We got a water jug yesterday at practice, dunked the balls in water, making sure we were using wet balls. Coaches were preaching that it’s going to be sloppy, and we have to do our stuff right.” Said O’Brien

O’Brien accounted for three touchdowns in the first half, including a surprise passing touchdown on fourth and long. The Colonials don’t pass much, even in situations where most teams would pass, but they do catch teams off guard at times, sneaking one of their blockers up the field for a pass. After a fake pitch to the outside, O’Brien found Dom Konieczka for a 16-yard touchdown to put P.W up 14-0. It was Konieczka’s second touchdown of the game, after he opened up the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown.

Coach Chang preached about his team doing the little things right in their win, “That’s what we do all the time in practice, is our fundamentals, our exchanges and being second nature with those things helped in this situation”

P.W’s defense also came to play, preventing Wissahickon from picking up a first down in the entire first half, which set up short fields for the Colonial offense. After O’Brien had a 26-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0, Gregory Fineburg scored from 27 yards and Anthony Ianozzi from 30 yards. Fineburg then added his second touchdown of the game with a 7-yard run right before halftime. Thomas Montemayor wrapped up the Colonials scoring with a 57-yard run on the first play of the second half.

The Trojans were able to get on the board with around two minutes left thanks to a Jeremiah Clark 8-yard run. In all likeliness this was Wissahickon’s last game of the season unless Penn Wood is able to defeat Interboro. Even though it might’ve a tough ending, there was still plenty of positive things that happened this season for them. The Trojans lost a lot of close games that could’ve easily gone the other way and their 3-7 record doesn’t tell the whole story.

For P.W, this was their eighth straight win, after dropping their opening game against CB South 35-27 and now it’s onto the District 1 playoffs. As of right now, the Colonials hold the number 5 overall seed in the 5A classification, which means they’ll host at least one playoff game, and right now they’d be matched up against West Chester Henderson.

P.W is a threat to any team in the 5A classification because of their ability to run the ball and eat up clock because of that. We’ll see how that plays out over the next few weeks as they chase a District 1 championship.
