Pope John Paul II quarterback Kamal Gray came into the South Philadelphia Super Site with some sexy offensive numbers.  The senior star passed for over 2,300 yards with 34 TD’s, completing over 64 percent of his passes while also rushing for over 500 yards.  However on this Friday night the Neumann-Goretti defense made life miserable for the young man. The Saints who came into the game with an 11-0 record    blitzed heavily and as a result Gray was able to complete just 9 of his 37 passes for 175 yards.   Trailing the Saints 22-21 late in the fourth quarter Gray found Justin Kormos wide open for a 43 yard TD pass with 1:32 left in the contest.  Now leading by 5 points the Golden Panthers had no choice but to try for 2 points after the score.  They were successful with Gray tossing for the deuce to  Steve Skarbek  and the Panthers were ahead 29-22.  After a short kickoff the explosive Saints had the ball  at midfield. It took the  men from South Philly just 26 seconds to score when Marqui Adams heaved the ball 37 yards for a touchdown to Malik Griffin.   Behind 28-27 the Saints went for 2 points. They did the right thing by giving the ball to Tysheem Johnson who is being recruited by most major colleges but the PJP defense ganged up on Johnson before he crossed the goal line as the East Side sidelines and stands went crazy preserving  the  29-28 lead.  When the clock finally reached 0:00 the hysteria reached another level since it was the first ever District 1/12 3A title for the Panthers .  The win qualifies the Golden Panthers for a first round State Playoff Game next weekend.

Gray opened up the scoring in the first quarter on a 10 yard run to pay turf. The PAT boot was good and it was 7-0.  The first quarter would see two more TD’s . Neumann-Goretti’s Johnson burst 20 yards for 6 points but the conversion run failed .  PJP caught a break late in the first quarter when Dylan Walker recovered a Saints fumble in the end zone for a TD. The PAT kick was no good and the scoreboard read 13-6 in favor of the Panthers. Griffin snagged a 30 yard TD pass from Johnson out of the pistol formation and Johnson added 2 more points with a PAT run.  The first half scoring closed when Gray sneaked in from the one and then his point after pass was complete to Walker giving the Golden Panthers a 21-14 lead. Johnson gave the Saints the lead for the final time  returning a punt 75 yards for a TD then running for the 2 point conversion for the quarters only scoring. The excitement would begin about 10 minutes later.
