Today the La Salle Explorers faced off against Neshaminy for their first live action in the new season. The air attack for the Explorers was phenomenal, Gavin Sidwar was finding multiple receivers way down the field. Two of Sidwar’s targets are familiar faces from last year, Joey O’Brien and J.P. Oates. The receiver who most impressed in this scrimmage was sophomore Owen Johnson. He made multiple big catches and was terrific after the catch, on one occasion he even went for an extra 40 yards or so. This was Johnson’s first real reps with the varsity players, and when asked about the plays he made Owen responded “I was getting out there, proving myself to the world, and showing everybody what I can do.”

Another key factor of the offense today was the running backs, junior Ahzir Nelson ran for 4 touchdowns and senior Desmond Ortiz looked very shifty from both the slot and out of the backfield. He is a big leader on this team and commented “Our fun this year is going to be going week by week, handling our business, and playing in December.” Gavin Sidwar was not the only quarterback who looked good though, sophomore Luke Gordon got into the game and made some very nice throws from the pocket into tight windows.

The defense also flashed excellence with the defensive line being able to stop the Neshaminy rushing attack on most plays. Eventually Neshaminy picked up some yards through short passes but twice, star safety Joey O’Brien sniffed these out and came down hill to make a stop. One more bright spot for the Explorers was sophomore defensive back Santana Swittenberg who came up with a big pick 6 towards the end of the day. Overall the defense looked very solid with playmakers all over the field.
