It’s hard to tell how a team will respond after taking a thumping in the previous game. A week prior, the Upper Perkiomen Indians walked off the field at Spring-Ford after a 55-0 shutout loss, but this week, the team’s response was one of resounding resilience and a 31-14 victory over Owen J. Roberts.

With the help of an explosive first half and impressive three-touchdown (2 rushing, 1 receiving) performance by running back Logan Simmon, the Indians headed into halftime with a 28-14 lead.

Early on, it was a scoring-fest as both defenses struggled with containment and were especially porous on 3rd down.

Upper Perkiomen struck first on its first possession with an 85-yard run by Simmon on a 3rd and long. Following, the OJR Wildcats hit back on an 11-play drive full of screen passes and wheel routes and capped off by a beautiful throw and catch from quarterback Michael Reed to senior wide receiver Dante DeNardo on a 3rd and long.

The fast-paced scoring action continued through the first half, but in the second, both defenses came ready to play.

Upper Perkiomen had several chances to put the Wildcats away but plenty of penalties and an untimely interception while driving in the red zone kept OJR in the game.

After a huge punt return by OJR’s Avery Grimm, the Wildcats had the chance to cut Upper Perkiomen’s lead down to a one-score game early in the 4th quarter. But on the goal line, the Indian’s defense held strong, forcing a turnover on downs on 4th and inches.

The following possession, Upper Perkiomen controlled the clock with a 12 play, 8-minute drive capped off with a school-record 45-yard field goal by quarterback/kicker Hunter Flack. Flack also threw for three touchdowns for the game.

Simmon ended the game with over 200 yards on the ground and three touchdowns for the Indians, and DeNardo showed off his soft hands with 10+ catches for the Wildcats.

Upper Perkiomen moves to 1-3, and OJR falls to 2-2 for the season.
