Tonight was the return of Friday night football and we had a game for you tonight. What a better way to start off the season than with two teams who desperately want to turn their programs around. This game featured West Philadelphia Speed Boys facing off against the Bishop Shanahan Eagles.

West Philly started the game off at a fast pace with back-and-forth runs by quarterback Zamari Poteat and running back Samari Moore. This eventually led to a passing touchdown to Samari Moore in West Philly up 6-0 in the first quarter.

After a much back and forth action, Shanahan managed to catch some heat with a couple of first down catches by Aiden Civitella. This led to a touchdown pass by Landon Wright to Anthony Aquila to tie the game up at the end of the first quarter. West Philly tried to respond back but was immediately  intercepted by Nate Olivo, which was followed up by a great throw to the back of the end zone by quarter back Anthony Aquila to put Shanahan up 12-6 going into halftime.

The second half started off with a lot of hard hitting defense from both teams and not much offense. Zamir Poteat started to put his team on his back as he had multiple first down runs. This led to him scoring a touchdown followed by an extra point run by Samari Moore, which put West Philly up 14-12 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

From that point on, West Philly had the momentum in the game. Zamari Poteat followed up with another touchdown to put them up 21-12 with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Shanahan fought with grit the whole game and even scored another touchdown by Aiden Civitella to bring them back within 2 point. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for Shanahan as West Philly’s defense line was too formidable of an opponent as they were able were to hold on and secure the win 21-19.

When I talked to West Philly’s head coach, Coach Bub, on how Zamri Poteat plays the role as the leader on the team he responded, “He is actually a silent leader. He just leads by action and the team believes in him.” Next week, West Philly is up against Dover as Coach Bub believes they need to bring more aggressiveness and speed to the game to ensure a victory.
