What does your offense need to improve on from last year?
The key is maintaining the production we had from last season with the new faces this season. On paper, we feel we can do that, there should not be a big dropoff with the talent we have returning. “The theme this coming fall will be maintaining our success, that sums up our expectations for Year #3 at Warren” said 3rd year Head Coach Mark Morelli, who is entering his 39th year coaching football, “We had a group of kids last season who were determined to shed the loser image and they did that going 6-4, our first winning season since 2013.” “With that comes higher expectations this season. We have a lot of production to replace, Jake Kupchella, Marvin Bryant and Devin McMeans played a key role last season with our success, we also need to replace two linemen who anchored things up front for us, Justin Eck and Colin Salapek.” stated Morelli, “But our off-season was the best it has been since I have been here, we had kids make major improvements in the weight room and the cupboard is not bare, we do return some talented individuals.” Replacing Kupchella will be Micah Passmore, who Morelli feels could have started for most teams in the area at quarterback. James Swanson looks to take over Bryant’s backfield position, both receivers return and 3 of the 5 starters on the line return.
What does your defense need to improve on from last year
Our last 3 games our defense played extremely well, we need to be more consistent throughout the entire season, not just 3 games. the Dragons return 6 starters but need to find a replacement for all league linebacker Aiden Morrison. “Our defense really closed out last season playing well, finding a capable leader to replace Morrison is going to be a key for us on that side of the ball.” said Morelli, “Having Sawyer back to kick for us is a huge plus, she did very well last season.”
What are your overall thoughts on this years team?
We are very encouraged by the willingness of this team to pout the time and effort into the off-season, there is no reason to think that will not carry over into the season. The challenge is to maintain the standards that last years team set. We have not had back to back winning season since 2013, that is our goal this year, a winning season and make the playoffs.
