The Butler Golden Tornado has lofty ambitions for the 2021 season. The team returns plenty of talent and believes it can compete with McDowell for a class 6A title in District 10.
When asked about his team’s goals, head coach Eric Christy made the Golden Tornado’s ambitions clear.
“We are looking to make the playoffs,” he said. “And win the District 10 title.”
And though Butler’s record in 2020 was an unimpressive 2-4, there is a reason for the lofty expectations in 2021. The Golden Tornado returns 10 starters on offense and 8 on defense, making Butler one of the most experienced teams in District 10.
Coach Christy expects that his big and experienced line will be able to control the line of scrimmage, allowing returning quarterback Cooper Baxter and runningback Isaiah Kelly plenty of room to work.
“We’ll be balanced with the pass and run and control the line of scrimmage,” said Christy. “We also need to limit penalties.”
The returning starters on defense should be able to put plenty of pressure on opposing quarterbacks and stuff the run game.
With all of Butler’s experience, it makes the Golden Tornado one of the more intriguing teams in District 10. The team’s success will come down to how much the current players improved in the offseason.
Though McDowell is the preseason frontrunner in Class 6A, much improved Butler is not a team to count out.
