In his first year as the Eagles head coach, John Reay looks to right the ship at Kennedy Catholic High School. But coming off a winless campaign in 2020, Reay has plenty of work ahead of him.

A native of Mercer County, Reay is a 2002 graduate of Sharon High School. Before taking the head job at Kennedy Catholic, he served as an assistant at Valley High School and Burrell High School in the New Kensington area. He is also the owner of the WPA Wildcatz, a semi-pro football team.

When it comes to personnel, there’s an open competition for all positions on offense and defense during training camp.

“With this being my first season, all positions are open,” Reay said.

Creating a winning culture

Reay knows what it will take to create a successful football program at Kennedy Catholic. And since this is only the team’s second year back on the varsity field since the 2013 season, coach Reay is looking to create a winning culture based on execution, discipline, physicality, and playing as a unit.

With the 2020 season in the rearview, expectations at Kennedy Catholic are all about looking forward. With a new coaching staff and plenty of talent returning, the Eagles believe they can compete for a region and district title.

“These young men have a lot of upside and talent,” Reay stated. “They just need to be led in the right direction.”

But Coach Reay knows there is a lot of work ahead before they start gaining attention in Mercer County and beyond. “We have to earn our respect and ranking in the district.”
