Spartan Defense was stellar all afternoon

Southern Lehigh piled up 373 yards on the ground and 5 rushing touchdowns, 226 of which were from Senior running back Asher Smith who tallied four of the scores, setting Southern Lehigh’s record for rushing yards in a season on Saturday, and sophomore kicker Christian Colasurdo hit 2 field goals (25 and 37) as the Spartans cruised to a 41-0 win over Oil City in the PIAA Class 5A playoffs at Bald Eagle Stadium in Milesburg.

“I say it all the time (Smith) doesn’t do it by himself but he has great vision, he sets up blocks and he runs hard. He does all those intangible things that make him a great running back,” Southern Lehigh coach John Toman said. “… Offensively, we did what we always try and do. If you were to tell me we were going into a state playoff game and (would) not have to punt the whole game, that’s pretty good.”

“We kinda went into this game with one hand tied behind our backs” said Oil City Head Coach Dan York. “We’re missing our starting quarterback, running back and have some other injuries and that certainly affected our play on the field but hats off to them (Southern Lehigh), that’s a very good football team. We just didn’t have an answer for the size of their line and 48 (Asher Smith).”

“We were scraping the bottom of the barrel to try to get our numbers up, they just out manned us” said York. Southern Leihigh jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with Smith getting his first two touchdowns on runs of 7 and 63 yards. On Oil City’s third drive of the day, trailing by 14, York needed to try and get a spark. Facing fourth and 2 at their own 28, the Oilers attempted a fake punt but the pass was knocked away giving the Spartans the ball at the Oilers 28. Four plays later Hunter Hughes dove in from the 4. Colasurdo closed out the first half scoring with a 25 yard field goal.

“We really didn’t change anything we do to prepare for them” said Spartans Head Coach John Toman. “Our line was dominant today and Asher just keeps making big plays for us”. Smith had td runs of 7, 63, 20 and 44 yards.

Oil City’s season ends at 12-1. Southern Lehigh will face Archbishop next week.
