In a contentious game Friday night, Brookfield defended their home turf, 46-21 over visiting Sharpsville. The Blue Devils kept it close most of the first half. Trailing 21-14 until Brookfield’s Rico Smith scored his third score of the half with 37 seconds left. The second half was slanted heavily in favor of the home squad, to win.
Brookfield’s Rico Smith opened the scoring with a 33 yard run up the middle. In the second quarter up 6-0, Ethan Martin added to the score with an uncontested 34 yard catch in endzone. Blake Hammond added the conversion with his feet.
A couple minutes later, Sharpsville’s Geno Currie found the endzone on a diving 5 yard plunge to cut the deficit in half, 14-7. Rico Smith’s second score came quickly, as he took a lateral on the kickoff return 85 yards for the touchdown. Starting up the middle and finding a seam to the left and taking it all the way. Follow Currie’s second score from 4 yards out, Rico Smith answered with a 12 yard run up the gut to push the lead to 27-14 after a failed conversion. The touchdown coming one play after Blake Hammond’s two yard run was called back for holding, moving the ball back to the twelve.
After a fast-paced first half, the second half clock ground slowly with stoppages. Blake Hammond started the scoring, extending Brookfield’s lead to 33-14, on another 12 yard run. Geno Currie secured his third touchdown of the day with a short one yard run on 4th and goal. Just over 13 minutes of play left in the game and the score was 33-21.
But the third quarter wasn’t over, as Blake Hammond found the endzone on another short run, and a 40-21 lead going into the fourth quarter. With the ball and the lead, Brookfield went for it all, on a 45 yard pass to Brody Smith, the starting placekicker. The pass down the right side just beyond the defenders as he found the endzone. His exuberance defied him, though, as his PAT attempt was low off the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.
Later in the game, Sharpsville found the endzone on an 80 yard run, but was called back due to penalty. On the final possession electing to kneel out the game clock.
