Cathedral Prep rallied for its eightieth straight win over McDowell Friday night at Gus Anderson Field.

“What a great high school football game tonight,” said Cathedral Prep head coach Mike Mischler. “It’s a shame that somebody had to lose.”

The Ramblers found themselves down 26-21 with just over five minutes to play.

Prep was not rattled, and the Ramblers moved right down the field as Jaelen Carson capped another great game with a 31-yard touchdown reception from Collin Johnson.

“We stayed in it and fought,” said Mischler. “We couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half until that finals drive. We made the plays when we had to, and I’m really proud of our football team.”

Johnson would add the 2-point rush to give Prep a 29-26 lead with 3:25 to play.

“Toward the end of the second quarter, they got pressure to take those passes away,” said Mischler. “We went back to it at the end of the game, and Jaelen made a great grab on that. Collin is a great quarterback, and we had a height advantage we could take advantage of, we were happy with the results.”

X’Zonder Goodwin would then intercept Chris Juchno on a 4th-and-14 to preserve the win.

“It was two outstanding football teams that played four quarters of football tonight,” said McDowell head coach Bo Orlando. “I give both sides credit, we had our chances, but we made too many mistakes.”

“Chris is a great quarterback for them, so we dialed up a blitz to force him out of the pocket on that play,” said Mischler. “We knew if we executed that play that it would be a tough throw for him to make.”

McDowell had penetrated the Ramblers 32-yard line.

It was the Trojans that had to rally in the second half as they found themselves down 21-7 to begin the third quarter as Carson took the kickoff back 88 yards.

“That kick return was unreal,” said Mischler. “I run the kickoff return, and Jaelen is one of my backups. Jaelen had patience then made the last guy miss that was a huge play,”

McDowell then began to punish Prep at the line of scrimmage scoring touchdowns on three straight drives.

Damrion Rash, who filled in for an injured Danny Blue, scored from three yards out, pulling McDowell to within 21-14 after three quarters.

Following a three-and-out, Elijah Lopez broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

However, a bad snap on the extra point forced holder Braeden Sobelski to try and run – being stopped well short.

Lopez had a monster game rushing for 243 yards on 41 attempts to lead the Trojans.

“They two great running backs and a big offensive line,” said Mischler. “Lopez is a handful. He’s so shifty and elusive. He’s an outstanding player.”

The Trojans would seize the lead when quarterback Juchno scored on 1-yard with 5:11 to play. Juchno’s 2-point pass attempt was intercepted by Jordan Adams, keeping the score 26-21.

McDowell certainly had its chances to take control in the first half.

They ate up over six minutes of game-clock from the opening kickoff and drove as deep as the Prep 7-yard line.

“We left some points off the board in the first half for sure,” said Orlando. “I’m very proud of how our kids battled for four quarters.”

Eventually, penalties would force a 39-yard field goal attempt that was no good. Juncho was also intercepted twice in the first half, both times by Adams.

Cathedral Prep cracked the scoreboard first when Johnson found Jack Oedekoven on a 30-yard touchdown pass.

McDowell would answer in time as Mike Beneski hauled in a 34-yard touchdown from Juchno to open up the second quarter.

Johnson and Carson would connect on a 57-yard touchdown pass that would give Cathedral Prep a 14-7 lead heading into the locker room.

“On the one long pass, our kid fell down – on that final drive, I credit their receiver for what he did on that catch,” said Orlando. “The kid made a great play on the ball.”

Collin Johnson would the Ramblers going 8-for-13 for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Luke Sittinger added 17 carries for 118 yards.

The win by Cathedral Prep over McDowell marks the 8th-straight win for the Ramblers. The last McDowell victory was 25-20 on September 2nd, 2011.

“We’ve got a beat-up football team, and we’ve played a brutal schedule,” Mischler. “I was delighted with our kids today. When we got down and then put that drive together, that was huge for our team. It also shows the character of our kids.”

Cathedral Prep now improves to 5-2 on the season while McDowell drops to 6-1.

“They just made plays at the end of the game that won the game for them,” Orlando. “Some of our drives we didn’t capitalize when we were in plus territory.
