Conneaut Eagles move to 2-0, after downing Iroquois.
A beautiful night for football in Linesville as two 1-0 teams did battle. The Conneaut Eagles and the Iroquois Braves took the field with a roar from the larger than expected crowd.
Iroquois scored on their second play to open up an exciting game. The score was 7-6 in favor of the Braves after the first quarter but that’s just when things started to heat up. Conneaut’s Joseph Furgiuele rushed 20 yards and scored for the Eagles who successfully converted a 2 point conversion to make the score 14-7. A quick defensive stand and the Eagles had the ball right back and Joseph Furgiuele struck again, this time from 43 yards but as Conneaut celebrated the unfortunate site of the yellow laundry on the field signaled that the touchdown would be negated. Half time would come before either team could score again.
In the second half Iroquois came out and marched all the way to the Iroquois 10 yard line before Cole Bennett’s pass was snatched by Eagle player Wyatt Luke. This started a 90 yard Eagles drive and surprise surprise, Joseph Furgiuele with a 60 yard touchdown run. The Eagles missed their extra point bringing the score to 20-7 in favor of Conneaut with 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Eagles Ben Easler was next as the QB keep it himself for a 17 yard touchdown taking the total to 26-7. The Braves were not willing to go quietly hitting a 57 yard Cole Bennett pass to Carmelo Hunter, which to plays later turned into a Bennett touchdown run. The score was then 26-15 Conneaut.
Iroquois attempted an onside kick unsuccessfully and it seemed Conneaut was driving right down to score again but they fumbled the ball on the Braves 23 yard line turning the ball over. Iroquois drove into Conneaut territory but failed to convert on a huge 4th down play. Conneaut would be sure to capitalize this time, as another 51 yard touchdown run took the score to 33-15 with only 2 minutes to play. The very next play Iroquois returned the kickoff for a touchdown before the referees called back the score on a holding call against the Braves. After a gritty drive Cole Bennett scrambled into the end-zone from 8 yards out and the score was Conneaut 33 and Iroquois 21. Another onside kick attempt but this time the Braves actually converted it and would send their offense back onto the field down 12 with 30 seconds remaining. This effort did not yield any points for the Braves and the filan score was
Conneaut 33
Iroquois 21
The Eagles go to 2-0. A great start for a program that has not had many of those in the past 10 years. Up next for the Eagles is a very good Hickory Hornets team.
