The Erie County All-Star team got an outstanding performance from their defense and just enough offense to edge the Erie City All-Stars 14-10 in the annual Save An Eye football game held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Erie.

Fans were treated to an outstanding football game, especially if one likes the effects of good defense, such as hard hits, getting key stops, and even scoring.  The game was nip and tuck the whole way, with the County Stars’ defense rising to the occasion twice in the waning moments of the game as the City had the ball deep in County territory.  Once on a fourth down attempt at the 26 and the second forcing a fumble on the last play of the game when the City had the ball inside the 10.

The City defense played almost as well and actually accounted for the game’s first score when Tyler Ackman of McDowell stepped in front of a pass and raced 39 yards to put the City up 7-0 in the first quarter after Anthony Lupo’s PAT.  The County tied the game early in the second when Nasir Singleton of General McLane ran one yard to cap a 65 yard drive.  The big play of that drive was a 40 yard scramble on third down by Northwestern’s QB Killian Cooper.

The City did not get a first down until less than two minutes were left in the half as the County defense played phenomenal throughout most of the game.  The City also came up big defensively stopping a County drive at their 11 late in the half.  And so, the game remained tied until late in quarter number three.

Singleton returned a City punt 18 yards to set his team up at the City 45.  Taking over four minutes off the clock the County methodically drove towards the end zone.  Cooper had to complete a fourth down pass to Seneca’s Michael Shearer to keep the possession alive, and a few plays thereafter Cooper called his own number taking the agate in from 5 yards out.  Jay Glus of Fairview connected on his second point after of the night and the County had a 14-7 lead.

The City countered with a Lupo 20 yard field goal very early in the fourth, but the County ‘D’ turned them away the last two possessions and thus ending a three game losing streak.  For the County, Cooper ran for 86 yards and threw for 57 more, while Singleton chipped in with 65 yards rushing.  The City was led by Joseph Campbell’s (Cathedral Prep) 55 yards rushing and Jason Williams’ (Erie High) 46 yards toting the ball.  The County had 217 total yards and the City gained 196.
