Greenville: Greenville pilled up 437 yards rushing and raced past a shorthanded Lakeview squad for their first win since 2019.

“It’s been a long coming,” said Greenville head coach Brian Herrick. “I feel for these kids. Our last ten games have been three Wilmington’s, three Farrell’s, three Sharpsville’s, and one Sharon. They kept grinding, and I’m proud of them.”

The last time the Trojans won a football game, it was a 14-7 victory over Northwestern in District AA Playoffs on November 2nd, 2019.

On Friday night, it was a long time coming.

Greenville exploded for four straight second-quarter touchdowns to open up a 29-15 halftime lead and never looked back.

Levi Swartz rushed for a game-high 228 yards on only 12 carries while scoring five touchdowns.

“He’s our breakaway threat,” said Herrick. “We blocked well from the line of scrimmage to our skill guys helping each other out down the field.”

Lakeview, who was playing without five starters, took the opening kickoff and the lead as quarterback Gavin Murdock scored on a 2-yard run, capping a 13-play opening drive that gave the Sailors an 8-0 lead.

“We had roughly seven players out, five starters,” said Lakeview head coach Bill Hickman. “That’s no excuse. You still have to step up and fill in. Hats off to Greenville. They were prepared and executed. This will be a wake-up call for our kids. We will rebound, and we’ll have everybody back next week.”

The Trojans responded on the first snap of the second quarter as Swartz raced 25 yards to the end zone.

Swartz would add touchdowns runs of 44 and five yards in the quarter. He rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns by halftime.

Malachi Hyde broke loose for a 64-yard run that pushed the Trojan to 21-8 with 5:05 left in the first half. Thanks to the long run, Hyde rushed for 87 yards on four carries.

“We had to settle in after getting down early,” said Herrick. “You can’t simulate Murdock. He’s a hell of a player. Once we got adjusted and put pressure on him, we were okay.”

Lakeview scored its second touchdown on Murdock’s 1-yard run with 46 seconds to play, before Greenville answered with Swartz’s 5-yard run with ten seconds to play.

“Tonight was one of those nights where the stars didn’t align for us,” said Hickman. “Gavin was a little nicked up, but there was no way he was coming out of the game. I know my quarterback. I still believe in this football team, and we’ll bounce back next week.”

Following Mason Dickens’ interception, Swartz scored his second touchdown from 25 yards out. Just over a minute later, Swartz ripped off a 60-yard run that pushed the Trojans’ lead to 42-15 after three quarters.

Hayden Robertson closed the scoring with a 40-yard run with 6:54 to play.

“It feels great to be able to bounce back this week, said Herrick. “We have a quality group of guys that can bounce back after taking a whooping.”

Gavin Murdock led Lakeview 14-for-35, 159 yards with three interceptions, while also rushing for 81 yards on 19 carries.
