Iroquois rushed for 378 yards and averaged 12.1 yards per carry en route to a 35-28 victory over Union City Friday night.

“I saw the way they played against Seneca, and I thought we were evenly matched,” said Iroquois head coach Matt Morgan. “I knew they were missing a couple of guys tonight, but nobody should have lost this game tonight.”

In a game that looked like the last team to have the ball would win, they nearly did.

Dante Carr ran in his second touchdown of the night with 52 seconds to play. Carr then intercepted Kyler Shaffer with on a 3rd-and-10 to play to steal the win for the Braves.

“They’re like in terms of the fact that we don’t want to be in a position to have to throw the ball to win in the end,” said Morgan.

In a back-and-forth fourth quarter, David Roscinski pulled the Bears to within a point with a 6-yard touchdown run with 3:47 to play. On the two-point conversion, Shaffer was under pressure and overthrew Zach Jewell. Union City trailed 29-28.

“I’m proud of the effort and fight tonight,” said Union City head coach Randy Gunther. “That was something that we’ve had to work on the last couple of seasons. They did not give up fighting, and I’m proud of that.”

The Braves had taken 29-22 lead when Michael Hoopsick broke free for a 62-yard touchdown one play after Shaffer scored on a 3-yard run that put the Bears up a point at 22-21.

“We were outmanned in a few situations, where we had some injuries in key positions,” said Gunther. “We had some guys that rose to the occasion. They had one more in the chamber than we did tonight.”

Hoopsick had a monster game rushing for 198 yards on only 13 carries. Kaleb Stull kept pace as he led Union City with 182 yards on 37 carries. As a team, the Bears rushed 67 times for 309 yards and did not attempt a pass in the first half. David Roscinski added 85 yards on 20 attempts.

Iroquois scored on its first two possessions as Carr scored from eight yards out, and Hoopsick added a 7-yard score.

“They did a great job with their wing-t, and we didn’t execute really well, and they did,” said Gunther. “However, we executed well on offense too. This was a great high school football game tonight. We came out on the short end tonight, but we’ll get a chance to play them again. Hopefully, we’ll be able to turn the page next time.”

Union City found their footing in the second quarter as Stull scored from three yards out, while Shaffer found pay dirt on a 1-yard sneak with 12 seconds remaining in the first half.

Shaffer’s touchdown came following an 88-yard drive after the Bears defense held on downs from their 12-yard line.

“We played awful last week, said Morgan. “We challenged them this week, and they responded. We play Union City again, and it could go the other way quickly.”

The Braves ran only five offensive plays in the third quarter but scored the lone touchdown as Antonio Rodriguez found the end zone on a 38-yard run. Rodriguez had six carries for 68 yards, and Carr chipped in with 98 yards on nine carries.

“Union City is similar to us with how they run that old school offense,” said Morgan. “I’m proud of our kids. We had some great individual performances. We have a solid offensive line and some great running backs. We’re blessed.”

Union City will try to bounce back next Friday night when they host Eisenhower. The Knights beat the Bears 47-0 on September 11th. Iroquois meanwhile will host Seneca, a team they beat 55-30 on September 11th.

“The last two years have been tough for us, but we’re getting better and looking forward to the rest of our season, said Morgan.”
