Millcreek: Mcdowell rushed for 328 yards and four touchdowns as the Trojans knocked off rival Cathedral Prep 31-12 Friday night.

“This was two great football teams battling tonight,” said McDowell head coach Bo Orlando. “I’m proud as hell of our guys. We were extremely physical on both sides of the ball. We had a great game plan defensively, but at the end of the day, our kids came out and executed.”

Christian Santiago and Artis Simmons rushed for 187 and 141 yards, respectively, to lead the Trojans.

“It was low scoring in the first half, and they gave us different looks,” said Orlando. “I thought both teams were playing well. Our kids responded tonight when they made big plays our kids came right back with big plays.”

However, McDowell’s game didn’t start well as Prep’s Wakeem Page ran 77 yards to the Trojans 3-yard line.

Two plays later, quarterback Carter Barnes scored from a yard putting Prep in front 6-0 after a blocked PAT.

McDowell responded on their first possession on Alex Sontheimer’s 30-yard field goal.

Cathedral Prep had an excellent chance to extend their lead early in the second quarter.

The Ramblers drove inside the Trojan 15-yard line.

However, McDowell’s Trey Goodwine intercepted Barnes at the Trojan 2-yard line.

McDowell would respond on the ensuing drive, scoring right before halftime as Santiago scored on a 2-yard run with 56 seconds to play in half.

“We had a lot of momentum plays, and for us to come up with that turnover then drive the length of the field was huge for us,” said Orlando. “I thought we defended their speed on the perimeter well outside of one play. You can’t give up big plays, and we did not do that tonight.”

The Trojans extended their lead in the third quarter when Santiago scored from three yards out.

The Ramblers responded to close the gap to 17-12 when Barnes scored on a 9-yard run with 2:55 remaining in the third stanza.

The extra point was again blocked. “They have some big boys up front that wore us out,” said Cathedral Prep head coach Mike Mischler. “I told the guys after the game that we lost this over the winter. They worked harder than we did. I give them a lot of credit. They beat us tonight, and we need to go back to the drawing board to better. I know we will.”

McDowell then put the game away when Santiago scored on a 2-yard at the 11:08 mark.

Then Simmon s found the end zone scoring from 11 yards out following a Prep muffed punt.

“We had our opportunities,” said Mischler. “We missed passes tonight. We had two mishandled snaps on third and short, a couple with two blocked extra points. The interception deep in their territory, those are mistakes you can’t make.”

Carter Barnes led the Ramblers, going 8-for-17, for 70 yards with an interception. While also rushing seven times for 24 yards. Camariyon Bridges added five catches for 55 yards.

Cathedral Prep will try and rebound next week when they travel to Cleveland for their matchup Benedictine.

“Next week, we have the number one team in Divison 2 in Ohio,” Mischler concluded. “We’ve had a four-week buzz saw here. We are beaten up right now but need to come out and play our best.”

McDowell now improves to 6-0 on the year and will look to keep things going when they host Hollidaysburg next Friday.

“Beating Cathedral Prep tonight is obviously exciting,” said Orlando. “We’re off to a good start right now, and we need to keep it going.”
