They say it’s hard to beat a team twice in one season. Meadville made it look easy Saturday afternoon at Edinboro University.

The win puts the Bulldogs one step closer to a District 10 5A championship after Meadville went 0-9 last season.

“We brought these guys into the weight room this offseason and said look we could go 0-9 again. Or we can put in this hard work and turn this thing around,” said Meadville head coach Ray Collins. “The kids came in and put in the effort and dedication. I’m so proud of these guys.”

The Bulldogs outscored Warren 35-0 in the second half en route to a 49-7 rout of the Dragons.

The game was a far cry, however, from the regular-season matchup that saw a 53-6 Bulldogs win.

“Warren was ready to play football,” said Collins. “I was proud of how we stayed composed when things were not going our way in that first quarter. We needed to settle in and get some urgency going. I told the kids that if we want there to be a tomorrow, we need to come out and play in the second half.”

Meadville shook off a rough start with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns as Hayden Parks scored on runs of six and 38 yards.

Parks led all rushers with a game-high 148 yards on 20 attempts. He would add a 12-yard run in the third quarter. While also scoring on a 20-yard reception from Landon Beck on a 4th-and-14 to begin the third quarter.

The Bulldog ground-game pounded out 61 rushes for 376 yards.

Aryan Cotterman also broke the century mark with 135 yards on 21 carries and scored a 4-yard run the put the mercy clock in at the 10:14 mark of the final quarter.

Also getting in on the action was Chandler Edwards, who scored from a yard out, and tallied 86 rushing yards on nine carries.

“When defenses have to prepare for what Parks and Edwards are doing outside. Then that is going to open up the middle for Cotterman to come through there,” said Collins. “We got them off balance in the second half, Hayden was hitting those outside runs nice for us.”

Meadville put their finals points on the scoreboard when Beck found Austin Chess on a 6-yard touchdown pass.

“This was a learning experience for our kids, we got them to believe they could come out and play hard against a team like this,” said Warren head coach Mark Morelli. “That 4th-and-14 play to begin the second half got the ball rolling in the other direction.”

Warren, who closes their season at 6-4, led 7-0 after a quarter.

Quarterback Micah Passmore found a wide-open Donovan Fiscus for a 32-yard touchdown pass at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter following a fake punt by the Bulldogs that the Dragons sniffed out.

“Our coaches saw something we thought would work,” said Morelli. “That 7-0 lead gave us the momentum we needed to come out and play hard. I can’t say enough about how hard these kids played this year. These kids as going to continue to work hard, and we’re going to get better each year.”

Following that touchdown, Warren was not able to move the ball. The Dragons were limited to zero yards of offense in the second half.

“The kids were excited at halftime, they knew they were in the game,” said Morelli. “When you get to the playoffs, you can’t make the mistakes we made in the second half. You can’t expect to beat a team like this.”

Meadville advances to play the winner of Oil City and General McLane.
