Northwestern used a strong special teams effort and stingy defense to blank Lakeview 33-0 Saturday night at Edinboro University.

The game marked the second time in October that the Wildcats had beaten the Sailors. Northwestern won the October 4th matchup 30-14.

“I give credit to their coaching staff. The scoreboard may not have indicated that, but they showed us a different look this time around,” said Northwestern head coach Mark Brooks. “You can tell that they’re coaching those kids hard down there.”

The Wildcats got things going early as Jake Kelley picked up a blocked punt and took it back 21 yards for the game’s first touchdown.

Austin Swift then broke loose for a 43-yard touchdown run touchdown.

Following a second blocked punt, Ryan Tewell rolled out and connected with Tanner Sumner on the next play giving Northwestern a 21-0 just 17 seconds into the second quarter.

“We preach every day that special teams are a third of the game,” said Brooks. “We put an emphasis on it, and it’s great to see that come through tonight.”

Logan Scott would add a 5-yard run before halftime.

During a steady downpour, Northwestern took a 27-0 lead into the locker room.

“You’re going to face adversity, whether it’s the wind or rain, or a tough playoff game,” said Brooks. “You have to try and come out and execute the best you can. I thought our kids played well all night.”

Swift would carry eight times for 62 yards, while Scott chipped in with 33 yards on five attempts.

The Sailors’ offense was never able to get moving during the steady downpour. Lakeview amassed just 126 yards of total offense.

“We have a couple of kids up that are pretty darn good,” said Brooks. “Alex Rimel, our senior defensive tackle makes a lot of plays. Ryan Simitoski, as well on line, played great. We changed up some things in the secondary and took their passing game away.”

Lakeview was led by Domanic Leonard, who tied a game-high in rushing with 62 yards on 11 carries.

“We came in with a good gameplan, but we just did not execute in the first half,” said Lakeview head coach Bill Hickman. “To the credit of these kids, they never quit. We had a great halftime, and I’m proud of my players for fighting hard until the end.”

Northwestern would close the scoring on Isaac Hawley 5-yard run with 32 seconds to play.

Lakeview closes their season at 1-9.

“A lot of teams would have chosen to opt-out and not come here,” said Hickman. “I believe in this football team, and I always have. We’re going to get this program turned around.”

Northwestern will now take on Greenville next Saturday night at 7 pm at Edinboro University.

“We lost to them 21-0 to kick off the season, but we’ve come a long way since then,” said Brooks. “They’re going to get our best shot just like anybody. I’m sure they’ve come a long way too.”
