New coach, same result, Sharon wins third straight District 10 3A title.

“It feels amazing, and I can’t say enough about this team,” said Sharon first-year head coach Jason McElhaney. “The way these guys battled I can’t put it into words, I’d go to battle for them any day.”

For the second straight season, the Tigers downed Grove City. This time it was by a count of 33-21. It marked the second time in 43 days that Sharon knocked off the Eagles.

“All the credit in the world to Grove City and coach Mowrey,” said McElhaney. “They have some great players, and their guys are tough as nails. We knew it was going to be another battle tonight.”

The Tigers won the October 4th matchup 30-23, and last year’s title game 23-6.

“We knew nobody’s going to remember that game in October,” said McElhaney. “They’re going to remember the District 10 championship.”

Leading the way for Sharon was quarterback Lane Voytik who passed for 286 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 16 yards and a score.

Voytik is now 8-0 District 10 playoffs games over his three seasons leading the Tigers offense.

“He’s as tough as they make him, and he battled tonight,” McElhaney said. “He not only made plays with his arm but with his legs as well. We knew he was going to have to take some shots tonight. He deserves that trophy again tonight.”

Opening the scoring, Voytik scored on a 1-yard run as Sharon marched 65 yards in ten plays.

Sharon pushed their lead to 13-0 when Voytik threw a strike to Ty Eilam for an 18-yard touchdown capping an 82-yard drive.

“That’s a talented and well-coached team over there, said Grove City head coach Sam Mowrey. “They were able to convert some of those third downs to keep the chains moving, and their offense did a good job.”

Eilam was the top target for Voytik catching 13 passes for 197 yards and the score.

Grove bounced back with Colby Nelson’s 10-yard run with 4:29 to play in the first half. The touchdown came one play after Logan Breese connected with Sayyid Muhammad for a 10-yard pass on a 4th-and-10.

The Eagles took the lead shortly after they took the ball to begin the second half.

Muhammad hauled in a 34-yard touchdown from Breese just 1:31 into the third quarter.

Sayyid Muhammad caught seven passes for 103 yards, while Breese completed 16-of-24 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.

Sharon would take a 12-point lead as they scored on back-to-back possessions following the Eagles score.

The Tigers marched 68 and 83 yards as Voytik found C.J. Parchman on touchdowns of 19 and eight yards.

Parchman caught five passes for 32 yards. His 19-yard score came off a tipped pass in the third quarter.

“He gave us a spark, to have him back on the field tonight after missing some games is huge,” McElhaney said.

Grove City closed the gap as they took advantage of a short field following a Parchman punt as Nelson scored on an 8-yard run with 5:14 to play.

Nelson led Grove City with 106 yards on 21 carries.

“I thought our defense was able to bounce back and make some plays, but unfortunately, we were not able to turn them into touchdowns when we had to,” said Mowrey.

Sharon then methodically moved the ball to the Grove City 37-yard line with 1:49 to play facing a 4th-and-1 with the District 10 title hanging in the balance.

Going for the win, Tyvell Richardson shook off a tackle a broke free for the title-clinching touchdown run.

“They talked me into it a little bit,” said McElhaney. “It was less than a yard. We’ve been practicing that for at least six or seven weeks. Tyvell made a play to spin out of it and win us the game. He made plays when he needed to.”

Grove City then muffed the ensuing kickoff with Sharon recovering.

Three kneel-downs later and the Tigers are now 3-time defending champions.

Grove City concludes another great season at 9-3 but comes up short of a District 10 championship for the second straight season.

“Losing is never something that’s easy or fun, but the reason it’s so tough is because of these guys here,” said Mowrey. “We’ve had great times with them, and they’ve had great times with each other. Losing a football game is one thing, but saying goodbye to seniors that have given you everything they have for four years is the tough part.”

Sharon improves to 9-3 and now will take on District ⅚ champion Bald Eagle Area next Friday night at Clarion University.

“They’re similar to what they were last year,” said McElhaney. “We know they have a very elusive quarterback and some great players. We’re going to enjoy this tonight, then get back to work as soon as we can tomorrow.”
