Sharpsville pulls away from Slippery Rock

Slippery Rock -Caullin Summers accounted for 338 yards of offense and tossed four touchdowns as Sharpsville pulled away from Slippery Rock 28-14 Friday night.

“I don’t think people realize they’re a great football team, said Sharpsville head coach Paul Piccirilli. “They were bigger, faster, and probably stronger, but we made big plays when we had to – or kids battled, played hard, and never gave up.”

For the first time since 2015, Sharpsville has started a football season 4-0.

It wasn’t easy, but the Blue Devils rallied from a 14-7 deficit and pitched a second-half shutout for the victory.

With the game tied at 14 entering the third quarter, the Rockets took the football and were on the move, but the Blue Devils forced and recovered a fumble to their 29-yard line.

“We didn’t play well,” said Slippery Rock head Larry Wendereusz. “We didn’t do well on offense and failed to make that play on defense that would get us off the field. We had a couple of turnovers that they converted into points, and that’s what good football teams do.”

On the ensuing drive, Sharpsville went on a 16-play drive, eating up nearly nine minutes of the game clock, and took the lead on Summers’ 27-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Byerly.

“Our defense stepped up when they had to,” said Piccirilli. “I’m proud of our entire team and coaching staff.”

A bad punt snap for Slippery Rock resulted in a negative ten-yard punt that led to Summers’ 6-yard touchdown pass to Byerly.

“We had the momentum there, we were driving downfield, and unfortunately, we turn the ball over,” said Wendereusz. “We haven’t been great at holding onto the ball all year. That’s a coaching issue now, and we need to do better during the week.”

Sharpsville opened the scoring on Summers’ 62-yard touchdown pass to Garen Levis.

Slippery Rock tied the game on John Sabo’s 11-yard reception from William Mokel. Sabo caught a game-high eight passes for 131 yards.

Mokel threw for 228 yards on 16-of-28 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The Rockets took their only lead midway through the second quarter when Maddox Allen scored on a 4-yard, following Brett Galcik’s 47-yard gain.

The Blue Devils evened the score at halftime as Summers and Levis connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass.

“That’s what we try to do, get Garen Levis in 1-on-1 situations at least a couple of times a game and let it fly,” Piccirilli said. “Caullin can throw the ball 70 yards downfield, and you saw that tonight as well as what he can do with his legs.”

Levis hauled in three passes for 117 and two touchdowns.

Caullin Summers completed 14-of-25 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns while intercepting a pass on defense and rushing for 138 yards.

Sharpsville will aim to remain perfect when they host Greenville next Friday night.

“This is the biggest win we’ve had since our programs have come together,” Piccirilli concluded. “It’s much easier to coach when you’re 4-0 versus 0-4.”

Slippery Rock will look to rebound when they travel to Grove City on Friday.

“We’re going to take week by week and prepare week by week, concluded Wendereusz. “We’ll break down the film and learn from our mistakes.”
