Titusville: Slippery Rock scored two touchdowns in the first two minutes to down Oil City 41-28 Friday night at Carter Field in Titusville.

The Rockets scored on their first snap of the football as Maddox Allen broke free on a 64-yard run.

Slippery Rock then recovered the onside kick and found the end zone again on Sal Mineo’s 24-yard reception from William Mokel.

“It was interesting week because they’re so good offensively,” said Slippery Rock head coach Larry Wendereusz. “We thought we needed to get them off balance, and we did that out of the gate. We told our guys all week that after our first score, we’re going to onside kick. We scored, then the guys looked at me, and I told them you know what we’re running. Fortunately, it worked out and got us up 14-0 in a hurry.”

Mokel completed 12-of-24 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.

The Rockets extended their lead to 17-0 on Nick Kingerski’s 29-yard field goal.

Oil City got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter when Ethen Knox scored on an 80-yard run.

“We got started on the foot tonight, said Oil City head coach Dan York. “We got down 14-0 before we even touched the ball. Never in my wildest dreams did I think they would be able to run the ball like that; my hats off to them. They played a great game.”

The teams went back and forth in the second quarter.

Maddox Allen scored on runs of 31 and 43 yards for Slippery Rock, while Ethen Knox scored on runs of 86 and 14 yards.

Nick Kingerski added his second field goal of the night from 34 yards out to close the first half. The Rockets led 34-20 at halftime.

Allen rushed for 182 yards on 15 carries, including 160 in the first half, and the Rockets rushed for 269 yards in the game. Brett Galcik chipped in with 38 yards on ten attempts.

“When you get in games, you have personnel you have to match up with, and they were trying to match up with our receivers. As soon as they did that, you take a linebacker out of the box, giving us an extra man we can run with,” Wendereusz. “Our offensive line and Maddox did an outstanding job creating holes and making cuts inside and outside.”

Likewise, Ethen Knox had another monster game rushing for 362 yards on 38 carries, including 18 rushes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Knox finished the season with 3714 yards and 41 scores.

“That kid is good, and not only is he good, but he has 1200 pounds of beef upfront, ready to kick your tail,” said Wendereusz. “We have to handle their offensive line and then deal with bringing down a kid with great vision and speed, which we saw tonight. We told our kids all week that he’s probably going to break one or two. We told them they needed to keep going, and they did that, especially in the second half.”

The Oilers cut the deficit to six points when Knox scored on a 2-yard run with 29 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Slippery Rock answered back on Brett Galcik’s 7-yard run 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Oil City’s last-ditch efforts came up empty as the Rockets advanced to Hickory in the semifinals.

“We had a good season and got a lot better from last year,” concluded York. “We were 3-5 last year and finished 7-3 now.”

Slippery Rock defeated the Hornets 23-20 on September 30th.

The Oilers close their season at 7-3.
