Ursuline holds on to beat Farrell 40-38

Kylon Wilson had 139 yards of offense and scored three total touchdowns for Farrell.

Farrell – Ursuline rushed for 353 yards and outgunned Farrell Saturday night.

In the debut of the new 1.5 million-dollar Pegues Sports Complex, the Ursuline Irish spoiled party with a come-from-behind 40-38 victory over the Steelers.

“I felt like this is a game we should have won, and we let it get away from us,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “I don’t believe in moral victories. They’re a powerhouse, but so are we, and both teams showed that tonight.

In a back-and-forth affair, Farrell stuck first after forcing a punt when Kylon Wilson hauled in a short pass from Kabron Smith and raced 51 yards for the game’s first touchdown.

 

Ursuline would answer a little over three minutes later as D.C Ferrell caught a 5-yard touchdown from Jack Ericson.

Both offenses continued to roll as Lamont Samules’ 21-yard touchdown reception from Smith put the Steelers back in front momentarily before Christian Lynch scored on a 2-yard run.

Wilson added his second touchdown of the night from three yards out, thirteen seconds into the second quarter.

However, Ursuline grabbed the lead on James Mcglone’s 34-yard field goal and Lynch’s second 2-yard touchdown run of the half at halftime.

“This was a great environment and support on both sides. They’re a fantastic football team,” said Ursuline head coach Dan Reardon. “We were fortunate to make one more play than they did. I’m proud of our kids.”

Christian Lynch finished with a game-high 268 yards on 41 carries, including 23 attempts for 122 yards in the first half and 146 on 18 rushes in the second half.

“We knew coming into the year that our offensive line needed to play well for us to be a great football team,” said Reardon. “We have a lot of new skill guys playing this year. Christian Lynch has had a great season, and quarterback Jack Ericson has also been very efficient through three weeks.”

Speaking of the second half, Farrell started it with a bang as Wilson scored his third touchdown of the night on a 94-yard kickoff return.

 

Kylon Wilson had an excellent game for Farrell, who caught four passes for 96 yards and a touchdown while adding 43 yards rushing and a score.

Mcglone’s second field goal of the night made it a one-point game at 27-26.

Farrell’s offense found the end zone for the only time in the second half when Smith tossed his third touchdown of the game to Julius Phillips’ from 17 yards out.

Smith completed 12-of-18 passes for 202 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

The Irish briefly took the lead back on Lynch’s third touchdown of the game from two yards out.

The Steelers special teams responded again as Brandon Chambers ran the ensuing kickoff back 83 yards for a touchdown.

“If you’re a team and you see those guys back there, you’d be better off trying to onside kick,” Pegues said. “If any of those guys get the ball in their hands, they can take it back at any time. Those guys are skilled athletes. They’re going to be great.”

Farrell failed to convert five of its six conversion attempts and held a 38-34 lead entering the fourth quarter.

“This was our second game of the season, and we’re not gelling just yet,” said Pegues. “Usually, it takes a couple of games for you to gell together as a team, and we’re only going to get better from here.”

Ursuline’s defense rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter to win the game, the first coming when the Irish forced a turnover on downs after Farrell had recovered a fumble at the Irish 38-yard line.

“Our guys hung in there and were able to make the plays when it mattered tonight,” said Reardon. “There were mistakes that we need to clean up, and they exploited us a couple of times.”

Farrell came up empty on both fourth-quarter drives when leading 38-34.

“Those were two points in the game where if we would have been able to score, we would have put the game away,” said Pegues.

Ursuline got the ball back with over five minutes remaining and faced a fourth-and-one at their 29-yard line.

Without hesitation, the handoff to Lynch paid off as he exploded 63 yards to the Farrell 8-yard line, where Ty’req Donlow scored on the next play giving the Irish a 40-38 lead.

 

“At that point in time, we felt we could get a yard,” said Reardon. “We were more comfortable going for it than punting and trying to prevent them from getting a first down.”

Farrell got the ball back with three minutes to play.

The Steelers moved the ball to the Ursuline 6-yard line, where they had a first-and-goal.

” I knew they had big play ability, and that kept me up all night during the week,” said Reardon. “We knew they would make plays with the athletes they have. We needed to do our best to limit them. Many of our guys played in big games like this last year, so they were battle tested and were not going to panic on our last drive or when they were driving at the end of the game.”

Farrell thought they had scored the game-winning touchdown, but Wilson’s 6-yard run was called back on a procedure penalty.

Two consecutive run plays netted little yardage, and Smith was sacked on third-and-goal.

“When it mattered most, our defensive line came up with two huge plays,” Reardon concluded. “When we got them behind the sticks, those guys up front are great pass rushers.”

On fourth down from the 20-yard line, Smith was again dropped by the Irish defense as the clock hit zeros to break the Steelers’ heart.

“That’s why you play schools like Ursuline,” concluded Pegues. “It wouldn’t do us any good to play schools, not on our competition level. We want to play the best, and it’s the best that will make us better.”

“Our ultimate goal is a state championship. We’re not worried about what happens with these non-league games. We want to win them, but these are the games that will make us better.”
