This Class 1A semi-final game is one to watch on Friday night as the Battlin’ Miners of Minersville take on the Bulldogs of Tri-Valley, a team the Miners lost to in the season opener 20 to 13. In that game, the Miners racked up a nice 272 yards of total offense while the Bulldogs piled up 341 yards. Tri-Valley rushed for 246 yards, led by Senior RB-Reece Huntzinger who finished the game with 95 yards, and Kameron Wetzel who added 91 yards on the ground. Jacob Scheib added 65 yards, scoring twice. Senior quarterback, Kole Miller completed just 26% of his passes going 9 of 26 for 95 yards, throwing 1 interception. For the Miners, Freshman-QB Dante Carr, finished with 151 yards, going 10 of 24, throwing 1 touchdown, but unfortunately also thew 3 interceptions against that very stingy Bulldog defense. Carr did score once on the ground, finishing with 65 yards on 8 carries, followed by Jr. RB-Luke Stevenosky, who had 55 yards. Jr. Lorenzo Yourey finished with 56 yards receiving, and Freshman Paiten Lapoint added 52 yards and a touchdown. With Williams Valley now in Class 2A, the Bulldogs are the favorite to win the District gold in 1A but the Battlin’ Miners have a different opinion and will be looking take down Tri-Valley in this rematch of week-1.

Coaches View:

Justin Frantz (Minersville) – The kids have been more upbeat and energetic than I’ve seen them in a long time. I think they’re always positive and ready to go but this week has been fun. Our practices have been very up-tempo and very physical. I think they’re ready to go and very excited. They wanted this rematch. We have to limit the chunk plays by their running backs. They have multiple backs that can run the ball effectively and we have to limit the big plays. Our goal is to keep them bottled up so we can get multiple people to the ball. Their defense is always good, they don’t give up many points at all. We have to stay to what we do, mix up the pass and the run, take shots based on what they give us and the biggest, is winning the 1v1 matchups. Our receivers have to keep putting pressure on the secondary. And if we can get them loosened up, then Stevenosky can get rolling from the backfield. Our kids feel they played a terrible game week 1 and still had a chance to win, so they want to prove they can win the big game!

Jeff Sampson(Tri-Valley) – N/A at time of publish

My Outlook:

It will be a very tough game for both squads, as they both have very good offenses. Defensively, the Bulldogs are stronger going by the seasons results but, the Miners will look to continue their scoring fest, like in their final two games of the season, going 2-0, scoring an average of 42 points a game, giving up just under 20. For Tri-Valley, their offense on the season has racked up 318 points in 10 games, giving up just 99(9.9/game). Rushing edge goes to the Bulldogs, while the edge in passing has to go to the Miners. As usual, the team that commits the lesser turnovers and penalties will win. Look for this one to be just as close as the season opener, maybe even closer. Can’t wait to cover this game tomorrow night. Goodluck to BOTH teams !
