Big Plays and Strong Defense Advances Tri-Valley to District XI Class 1A Championship with win over Minersville 24 to 13 !

@PFNDan570FB and @daub_dawn on the scene !!

With the win, Tri-Valley will travel to Northern Lehigh next weekend to face off against the wait, what’s this… yes, face off against the Bulldogs, should make for some interesting commentary. But first, let’s talk about the game at hand, Minersville and Tri-Valley. Once again it was a beautiful evening in Hegins for some High School Football under the lights on a Friday night. We had two teams that played each other earlier in the season, week 1 in fact where the Bulldogs defeated the Battlin’ Miners 20 to 13. Both teams came wanting the win and it showed when on Minersville’s first possession, the Bulldogs record two sacks in the games first three plays, the first sack by Jacob Scheib, for a loss of 7 yards. A pass to Logan Hutsko for 14 yards gave the Miners life but on the next play, QB Dante Carr would be sacked again, this time for just a 1 yard loss setting up a 4th down and four. The Battlin’ Miners would punt and Tri-Valley would return to the Bulldogs 40 early in the first quarter. Minersville defense showed they were ready when on the first play for Tri-Valley, the pass would be deflected. Next play, Luke Stevenosky would make a nice tackle on Kameron Wetzel for a loss of about 7. A punt block by Minersville’s Stevenosky would set up the Miners in great field position at the Bulldogs 25 but a turnover on downs 8 plays in would stop the drive at Tri-Valley’s 5 yard line. Five plays later for the Bulldogs would see the games first score when pass from Kole Miller, who finished the first half 6 of 8 for 133 yards, connected with Chase Stephen for 39 yards for the touchdown, point after was good giving the Bulldogs a 7 to 0 lead with 3:41 left to play in the opening quarter.

We wouldn’t see another score until late in the second quarter when the kicker for the Bulldogs would boot a 33 yard field goal, to extend their lead to 10 with under 5 minutes to play in the first half. Minersville would mount a drive, going 61 yards down to the Tri-Valley 19 yard line before turning the ball over on downs with just seconds to go until halftime with the score 10 to 0 Bulldogs.

Tri-Valley would receive the second half kickoff and would try to put together a drive and score on their first possession, that was the plan said Coach Sampson coming out of the locker room after halftime ended. That wouldn’t be the case however as the Bulldogs would end up punting after a couple big penalties would halt the drive at the Tri-Valley 30. A great punt and roll from the punter had the Miners backed up deep in their own territory at the 15. A very good, long drive, taking just over 5 minutes off the clock would end when on a 3rd and 5, the pass would be incomplete, forcing a punt from the 40, the punt would be downed at the 5 with 4:31 to go in the third quarter. Just six plays later, we had ourselves another score from the Bulldogs following two huge gains from Wetzel totaling 80 yards, set up the scoring play, a 7 yard run from Wetzel to give Tri-Valley a big 17 to 0 lead with 1:31 to play in the 3rd quarter. Minersville wasted no time to respond with a 3 play, 65 yard drive, capped off by a run from quarterback Dante Carr for 66 yards with :36 seconds in the 3rd. A short kickoff attempt would setup the Bulldogs in good field position on their next possession at the Tri-Valley 42 eventually ending the quarter with the score 17 to 7 going into the final quarter of play.

On the drive, the Bulldogs wouldn’t be able to complete a 3rd a 1 try and would have to punt back to the Miners. Once again, it took just 3 plays for Minersville to score and close to gap to 17 to 13 when Carr would hit Freshman wide receiver Paiten LaPoint for an 85 yard touchdown however the point after failed. With 10:06 left to play, Tri-Valley needed to respond and did just that when just two and a half minutes later, it would be Kameron Wetzel scoring once again, this one, a 6 yard rush to the endzone with 7:05 to go in the game. Minersville would suffer an interception on the next play for the Miners, Layne Yoder on the pick. Then suddenly, like last week almost for the Bulldogs, things got a little sloppy as both teams would turn the ball over. Bulldogs fumbled at the Miners 6 yard line, recovered by Minersville. Another interception from Carr by Jolten Flory would have the Bulldogs at the 47 with 3:01 to play. Six plays later, it was Miller that would throw a pick to Hutsko and the Miners would have their shot to come back and close the gap but would turn the ball back over to the Bulldogs just 4 plays later after the pass on 4th and 5 would fall incomplete with just seconds to go till the final horn blew. A kneel down by Miller would end the game with the final score Tri-Valley 24, Minersville 13. With the win, the Bulldogs will travel to Slatington to battle the other Bulldogs, of Northern Lehigh(10-1), who defeated Mahanoy Area 30 to 7 in the other DXI Semi-Final.

Before the game I spoke with Coach Sampson and he had much credit to give his assistant coaches for his success leading up to his 100th victory after the win last night. Coach would go on to mention how between two of his assistants, they have just about 80 years of coaching experience. During the post-game interview, I had to definitely congratulate the Head Coach on a job well during his time at Tri-Valley, five years in fact.

Game Stats, and video highlights will be upload later today, or by Sunday morning. Below you can watch the post-game interviews and check out some amazing photos from Dawn Daub.
