Big Second Half Helps Thorpe Cruise to a Victory

On a cold Friday night, the Green Wave of Nativity traveled to Jim Thorpe to take on the Olympians in a battle of 5-2 teams. Coming off of a loss last week, the Olympians looked to rebound in a big way.

On their opening drive, Thorpe ended with a punt. Much like most of the season, special teams came up big pinning the Wave at the 20. After a few stops, it was Nativity’s turn to punt. On the snap, the play was blown dead for the punters knee being down, giving the Olympians the ball at the 13 yard line. Nativity didn’t make it easy however. After being stopped on 3 attempts at the 2, running back Cam Tinajero powered in for the 7-0 lead to end the first quarter.

Nativity put together a drive of their own after the kick. Quarterback Cody Miller showed off his athleticism on a broken play, scampering 39 yards for a Green Wave score to knot things at 7 going into the half.

Jim Thorpe would let Nativity get no closer in the second half.

After a quick 3 and out for the Green Wave, Thorpe took over. A long drive saw the Olympians faced with a 3rd and goal. A nice play action set up a connection from Davier Calcano to Cam Tinajero for a 14-7 JT advantage. Another 3 and out handed the ball back to Thorpe. This drive ending with yet another Tinajero score from 13 yards out. Chris Condly’s extra point left the score at 21-7 after three quarters.

The Red Swarm defense continued it’s second half shut down to start the fourth. Forcing yet another Nativity 3 and out. Much like the first two drives of the half, this one ended in a score as well. Calcano went up top with a beautiful pass to tightend Ian Hubbard for a 30 yard strike. After yet another punt, Thorpe running back Sal Capria decided to join in on the fun. Capria broke off down the sideline and into the endzone for a 36 yard score to push the Olympian lead to 35-7. Nativity got some momentum rolling and put together a nice drive, ending in a Miller 2 yard score. A few first downs and a kneel down sealed the victory for Thorpe, giving them the 35-13 win.

Jim Thorpe (6-2) and Nativity (5-3) will both wait to see where the district 11 playoff bracket has them placed going into the start of next weeks tournament.
