JIM THORPE- When two teams are so evenly matched, sometimes a game can come down who does the little things best. Friday night the Crimson Tide did just enough to topple the Olympians by a score of 32-26 in a key Schuylkill League contest in front of a packed house.

Jim Thorpe dominated the contest early by jumping out to a 10-0 lead. CJ Selby got the scoring started with a 52 yard bolt at the four minute mark of the opening quarter. The Tide then fumbled the ensuing kickoff back to the Olympians at the Pottsville 30. They drove inside the ten, but losing yards on a run play ten a illegal procedure call pushed the ball back to the 15. The Tide forced a sack and it forced a 36 yard field goal by Chris Condly.

Much of the rest of the half was a defensive struggle, neither team could make any headway. Late in the quarter after a Pottsville punt Jim Thorpe was driving for another score with less than a minute in the half, but momentum would change as Mason Barnes picked off an errant pass setting up a first and 10 from the Tide 25.

Damon Yost connected with Barnes, who was streaking down the sidelines with a 73-yard score making the score 10-7 at intermission.

“We felt that was the turning point of the game. We made few mistakes in the half, but we battled back after the fumble on the kickoff. We held them to a field goal. Then we get the interception and then the big play for score right before half was huge.” Pottsville coach Tom McGeory stated.

The scoring barrage began on the opening drive of the second half as Pottsville brought the kickoff back deep into Olympian Territory. Kevin DiCello dashed in from 29 yards out. Yost then hooked up with Daulton Mates to make the score 19-10 with a 43 yard score.

Selby scored his second touchdown of the night on a 2 yard run after Pottsville turned it over on a bad snap and was returned to the Tide 15 bringing the score to 19-17.

Pottsville increased it’s lead to 32-17 in the final quarter. Kevin Schenk was on a receiving end of a Yost pass for 17 yards with 8:05 left in the game. Bobby Walchak darted in from 13 yards out with 2:30 left.

Jim Thorpe made it a one score game on a 26 yard pass from Davier Calcano to Selby with a 1:15 to play after a 52 yard drive.

Pottsville recovered the onside kick but went backwards with a couple penalties and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. From their own 28 yard line, just a dozen ticks on the clock and the Olympians having no timeouts, The Tide gave up a safety, but could not run out the clock leaving the score at 32-26 with 3 seconds left. On the ensuing free kick, Jim Thorpe pounced on the ball, leaving one shot to get a score, but Calcano’s pass was picked off sealing the win.

Pottsville (7-1) will host Blue Mountain (4-4) next Friday night. The Blue Eagles coming off a 39-7 loss to North Schuylkill. The Olympians (6-2) will be at 6-2 Tamaqaua, who destroyed Lehighton 54-6.
