BETHLEHEM- We all have seen the movie, where the victim is tied to the railroad tracks, with the train barreling down the rails, the hero arrives to save the day, at the last instant. Sorry to say that Saturday afternoon at BASD Stadium, there was no hero in sight to assist the Golden Hawks of Bethlehem Catholic as the Zephyr express from Whitehall left no doubt, that they are back in a dominate 49-14 rout before a decent crowd.

Whitehall scored on their first seven possessions of the first half in getting their first EPC South win since 2018 against Allentown Central Catholic.

The Zephyrs score right out of gate as the the opening drive going 62 yards on seven plays capped off with a Damonte Foreman one yard score with the PAT made it 7-0 with 9:39 left in the quarter.

Becahi(0-2), who had turnover issues in an opening night loss to Northampton, had issues holding onto the ball in this matchup, on their third play from scrimmage, Whitehall forced a fumble and recovered at the Hawks’ 30. Quarterback Quinn Wentling led his team to the ten a couple of plays later. Running back Nigel Linton scored from there, PAT was no good leaving the score at 13-0 at the 8:59 mark.

On the next Hawk possession produced another turnover, giving the Zephs the ball inside the Hawk 25, where Wentling kept the ball himself from five and dove in the end zone inside the pylon to make it 20-0 with 6:30 still to play in the opening quarter.

After forcing Bethlehem Catholic to punt. Whitehall took over at their own 32, drove the 49, from there Wentling hooked up with Ryan Kovalchik streaking down the seam, who took it stride and deposited the rock in the end zone extending to a 27-0 lead with 2:20 on the clock.

Becahi avoided being shutout in the contest when quarterback Jared Richardson was able to avoid a sack and scampered down the sidelines for a 55 yard score to cut the lead to 27-7 near the end of the first twelve minutes.

The second quarter had Whitehall finding the end zone three more times. A 2 yard run by Foreman, Linton had a 25 yard score and Wentling went on a twisting curling stumbling run for 24 yards to make the score 49-7 as the half came to the end.

Wentling completed 10 out of 12 passes for 170 yards and the touchdown, he also rushed for 71 yards on 12 carries and the two scores.

Whitehall coach Matt Senneca stated after the game about his quarterback, “He doesn’t let the moment get to him, he always seems to make the right decisions out there.” The guys trust him and he steps up.”

With game being played in mercy rule the whole second half, the Hawks did manage one other score, when Zyaire Morris scored with 11:00 left.

Whitehall(2-0) will be at home next FRiday against Bethlehem Liberty(1-1) coming off a 24-16 win over East Stroudsburg South. Bethlehem Catholic will need a win next week at Pocono Mountain West(0-2) coming off a 17-14 loss to Northampton, to keep playoff hopes alive.
