The Marian Colts earned a victory over the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes in the first game of the season with a final score of 21-7.

Matt Martin dominates and scores all three touchdowns for Marian.

It looked to be a great night for some football. The sky was cloudy with comfortable temperatures as the players took the field. Rotary Field was filled with anticipating fans, including Haven’s student section. The coin toss resulted in Marian receiving the kickoff, which was a touchback. The Hurricanes were ready to compete at the start, with an interception by freshman, Niko Castillo. Aiden Myers then got to work pushing the ball up the field, but time expired with no score after the first.

Marian came out for the second quarter strong. Seniors Joey Walko and Matt Martin rushed for big yards, ultimately leading to Martin running in for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Haven’s Logan Carl. The Hurricanes bounced right back with freshman Niko Carestia running 44 yards for a touchdown. Reese Felty laces the extra point. Haven then attempted a field goal at the end of the quarter , but it was blocked by Jesse Rodino. The half ended with Haven up a point, 7-6.

Marian controlled the rest of the game. Rodino stripped the ball and the fumble was recovered by Marian. Martin rushes in for another touchdown. Marian was also able to convert on a 2-point conversion, a pivotal moment in the game. Haven hoped to make a push after Connor Goehring ran for 31 yards, but resulted in no score. The score at the end of the third was 14-7.

Haven gave a last ditch effort after Carestia forced a fumble and Matthew Kreiser recovered.
That effort wasn’t enough, and they didn’t score for the rest of the game.
Martin continued to dominate as he scored his third touchdown. Game ended with a final score of 21-7. Coach Mike Farr and the Hurricanes will take on Nativity BVM at Rotary Field. Coach Stan Dakosty and the Colts will take on Minersville at Minersville Football Field.
