Liberty Wins City Championship Against Crosstown Rival Freedom

For the first time since 2018 the Liberty Hurricanes are City Champions after the 42-14 defeat of their crosstown rivals the Freedom Patriots. The Hurricanes came out firing on all cylinders, right from the start, on both offense and defense. Freedom’s normally stingy defense gave up four first half touchdowns to the Hurricanes and their senior quarterback Antonio Fontanez had his hands on all four scores, three by air and one by land. His favorite target of the day was Zyaire Davis, the junior wide receiver caught two of the three, plus one in the second half. Senior wide receiver Jake Pukszyn, the recent Lehigh University commit caught the other touchdown. And senior running back Adriaan Deleon added a rushing touchdown for Liberty. But the defense is the unsung hero of the day, holding Freedom to only one score in each half for a total of 14points and continually gave the offense great field position. As is in most rivalry games, the score did not effect the atmosphere in BASD Stadium, which was electric all afternoon and each fan base got behind their team from start to finish.

Freedom won the toss and deferred to the second half. Nathan Stannard kicked off and Gabe Green returned it to the Liberty’s 30yd line, where they started first and ten. Like I said, Liberty came out firing and on the third play from scrimmage, Antonio Fontanez threw a 48yd touchdown pass to Jake Pukczyn for the first score of the game at 10:43 in the 1st quarter. After a missed extra point attempt, the Hurricanes led 6-0.

Freedom started on their own 35yd line, after Christian Hackett kicked off for Liberty. Unable to get a first down, Freedom went three and out and punted to the Hurricanes. Liberty started with great field position at Freedom’s 41yd line and took full advantage of it. They drove to the 12yd line where Fontanez connected with Zyaire Davis for the touchdown at 7:56 in the first quarter and after a successful point after Liberty led 13-0.

Freedom started the next drive on their own 27yd line, and Michael Stofanak connected on three straight passes, two to senior wide receiver Jaxson Pierson for 12 and 8yds setting up a second and two from Freedom’s 47yd line, where Stofanak connected with Davyan Moore for 53yds and the touchdown. The Patriots cut the lead to 13-7 at 6:26 in the first quarter.

13-7 and now we have a game, Freedom was able to stop Liberty next drive at the freedom 34yd line. But Christian Hackett was able drop a punt that pinned Freedom at the 3yd line. The Patriots were unable to put a drive together and punted to Liberty from their own 26yd line and the Hurricanes started from their own 27yd line. This drive ended with Antonio Fontanez, connecting for the second time to Zyaire Davis for 43yds and the score. The point after was good and Liberty led 20-7 at 8:56 in the second quarter.

Liberty’s defense came up big on Freedom’s next possession, Jake Pukszyn intercepted a Michael Stofanak pass and gave Liberty the ball back at their own 38yd line. And at 4:25 in the second quarter Antonio Fontanez ran in from 8yds out and after the extra point Liberty led 27-7.

Both teams were unable to put a scoring drive together and the score at the half was 27-7, with Freedom set to receive the second half kick. The Patriots were able to put a long drive together, starting at their own 31yd line and ended with Jahaire Hughes taking in from the 6yd line at 5:33 in the third quarter, closed the gap to 27-14

Liberty was able to put their own long drive together on their next possession, starting deep in their own territory at 10yd line. The Hurricanes were able to overcome a rash of penalties and score on second and goal from the 26yd line, when Fontanez connected with Zyaire Davis for the third time today for a touchdown at 2:54 in the third quarter. The Hurricanes went for a two point conversion and Fontanez found Jake Pukszyn in the endzone, Liberty led 35-14.

The fourth quarter did not go any better for the Patriots, they gave up one more score to Liberty when Adriaan Deleon ran it in from 16yds out at 11:22 in the fourth quarter and Freedom was shutout in the final period. Final score 42-14 Liberty regains the City Championship. It looks these two team will face off next week in round one of the District 11 playoffs. Freedom is hoping history repeats itself, and turn around and beat Liberty next week like they did 2018.

Caught up with Antonio Fontanez after his four passing and one rushing touchdown performance today.

Talked with Zyaire Davis after game, he caught three touchdown passes today.
