Minersville doubles up Tri-Valley 34 to 17 with strong offensive performance behind the legs of Junior RB-Derek Derenzo !
Minersville didn’t waste any time putting points up on the board after receiving the opening kickoff going 65 yards on 7 plays capped off with a 41 touchdown pass from UCF commit-Dante Carr to a WIDE OPEN Ty Atkinson for a quick 7 to 0 lead in the first quarter.

Tri-Valley wasn’t to be outdone, when on their first possession, marching down the field on a master-full 17 play drive that took us into the second quarter and the games next score when RB-Parker Hatter rumbled in from 3 yards out to tie the game at 7 each. Minersville suffered its first of three turnovers for QB-Carr when Parker Hatter of Tri-Valley picked off the pass and returned to the Miners 14, giving the Bulldogs momentum. The Bulldogs took the lead shortly after with a Nathan Hillard 31 yard FG, the score now 10 to 7 Bulldogs.

Minersville’s quarterback shook off the last possession memories on the next drive going 80 yards on 7 plays finished off with a beautiful strike to his long-time teammate Paiten LaPoint for 38 yards and the score to retake the lead 14 to 10 with 4:33 to go till halftime. The Battlin’ Miners added to their lead soon after with a PICK-6 by the little Freshman John Lutsky, giving Minersville a little cushion heading into the half leading 21 to 10.

Things looked to be falling apart for the Bulldogs as on their next possession, Tri-Valley turned the ball over from a high snap that was recovered by the Miners. Tri-Valley’s defense was ready for the task at hand when on the very next play for Minersville, Carr suffered his second INT of the game on a tipped pass that fell into the hands of the Bulldog defender. Just before the first half came to a close, the Bulldogs regained the momentum back going 42 yards on just 4 plays, scoring on a touchdown pass from Trey Porter to Cooper Carl from 25 yards out to cut the lead to 21 to 17 at halftime.

Having the momentum in their favor coming out of the half, the Bulldogs received the kickoff and began to drive until a couple of false starts stalled the drive, forcing a punt, which was launched down to the 3 yard line of Minersville. A defensive flag on Tri-Valley gave the Miners an extra 5 yards to start the drive. With Carr struggling just a bit throwing the ball, the Miners switched things up some going with the running game led by Junior-RB Derek “The Dominator” Derenzo who carried the ball 5 times on the drive for 42 yards, setting up his touchdown run of 5 yards to extend the lead for the Miners to 28 to 17 to start the final quarter.

Most of the time, when a QB throws 3 INTS in a game, things usually don’t end well for that team. On Minersville’s next possession following a fumble by the Bulldogs, recovered by Miners’ Ty Atkinson, Carr threw his third INT of the game, this time, picked off by Trey Porter in the endzone. Unfortunately for Tri-Valley, the offense only managed 9 yards, turning the ball right back over to Minersville with 5:15 to play.
Minersville secured the victory when on first and goal from the 7, Derenzo ran it in for his second score of the evening, putting the Battlin’ Miners in command 34 to 17 with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game. Tri-Valley made a run at another score getting all the way down to the Miners’ 6 yard line before suffering yet another turnover on downs when on 4th and 3, the Miners’ defense stuffed the run to seal the deal and game 34 to 17.

After the game, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dante, Derek and Coach Frantz, below you can listen to what they had to say on tonight’s record breaking preformance by Paiten LaPoint, who broke the school record for receiving touchdowns in the single season, currently with 11. Spoke with Dante on his milestone for career rushing yards going over 3000 yards on the ground.
