Nativity’s Colt Mason manages just enough offense to squeak out narrow victory 12 to 6 over Pine Grove on a beautiful cool August Friday night.
Early in the first quarter, Pine Grove turned the ball over twice giving the Green Wave two chances at scoring opportunities but not much would amount in the drives. On a 3rd and 6 for Pine Grove at their 26, Nativity’s Cooper Felty intercepted the Wyatt Snyder pass and returned it to the Pine Grove 12 yard line with 5:20 left in the first quarter. Following a couple plays, the Green Wave had the ball first and goal at the 1 yard line when the snap went over the head of Colt Mason, Mason recovered the ball but suffered a loss of 15 yards, now second and goal at the 16 yard line with 3:50 to go first quarter. Another high snap to Mason would result in more yards lost, this time for 4 yards, making it 3rd and goal from the 19 yard line. Nativity ended up turning the ball over on downs when the pass from Colt Mason went incomplete.
Still in the first, Pine Grove punted from the 20 to the Nativity 42. Following a penalty, it was first and 20 at the Nativity 32, On 3rd and 20, Felty ran for the first down to the Cardinal 48, with 10:40 to play until halftime. Quarterback Mason hit Bentley Werez with a slick forward pass for 12 yards. Mason kept the ball and ran for 13 yards a play later, giving the Green Wave a first down at the 25. The drive would stall however when big Wyatt Snyder tackled Mason for a 2 yard loss, making it 4th and 3 at the 18, a huge penalty gave Nativity a first down at the 13, now on 3rd and 11 at the 14, following an incomplete pass, another penalty on the Cardinals, pass interference gave the Green Wave first and goal at the 7. Colt Mason once again on keeper for 7 tough yards and the first score of the game, the point after attempt was no good following a bad snap with 6:22 to go and eventually being the score at halftime.

Nativity seemed to struggle offensively having just 1 returning starter from last season and with their number one wide receiver out for the game, made it difficult to get things going in the passing game. We just “have to get better at throwing the ball”, Coach Mason stated after the game. Quarterback Colt Mason led the Green Wave offense with 87 yards on the ground on 21 carries despite going just 1 for 7 in the air for just 12 yards.
Nativity received the second half kickoff, beginning the drive at their 33, Felty with a big 29 yard run to the Pine Grove 2 yard line set up the games next touchdown, 3 plays later, QB-Mason took it himself from a yard out for a 12 to 0 lead with 8:19 to go in the 3rd. 2pt play was no good.

Pine Grove started their first drive of the second half at their own 35. The Cardinals started to move the ball running the ball down the field eventually putting it in with a Zach Kurtz powerful touchdown run of 17 yards on 3rd and 4 to cut the lead to 12 to 6, the PAT blocked.

Pine Grove’s defense was led by the BIG linebacker/quarterback-Wyatt Snyder with multiple tackles for loss. On offense for the Cardinals, it was the duo of Junior RB-Logan Troup and Junior FB-Zach Kurtz who gathered a total of 181 yards on 36 carries between the two. Pine Grove would out gain Nativity 201 to 129 in total yards in the loss.
With the victory, Nativity goes to 2-0, a start that “nobody saw coming” said Coach Mason. Next up for the Green Wave, a road game at Williams Valley, the 2-0 Vikings have yet to be scored upon all while putting up an impressive 96 points in their first two games. Pine Grove, now 0-2, travels to 1-1 Tri-Valley to see which of these two programs can rebound after losing very close games.
