Pottsville crashes Jim Thorpe’s Homecoming

The new turf at Jim Thorpe stadium

The atmosphere in Jim Thorpe on Friday night was electric. Not only was it Homecoming and Senior night for Thorpe, but it was also the reveal of their brand new turf field. A battle with fellow 5-1 Pottsville didn’t make for a good debut for the Olympians.

To start the show, the Olympians took the kickoff. A long pass from Davier Calcano to Chris Strika down to the 10 yard line had the Olympians in business early. Pottsville tightened up and held Thorpe to a field goal and an early 3-0 lead. The Red Swarm defense pitched a shut out for almost all of the first half. A huge momentum shift came with 20 seconds left in the half. On a 4th and 22 Pottsville quarterback Jazce Carabello-Snowell connected with Raeff Dicello for the score giving the Tide a 7-3 lead going into the half.

Pottsville carried over their momentum into the second half as they took the ball right down the field for another score and a 14-3 advantage. Thorpe didn’t go away quietly tho. After a punt, the Olympians defense came back out onto the field. This time getting pressure on Carabello-Snowell and forcing a fumble. A few plays later Cam Tinajero broke free for a 17 yard score to cut the deficit to 14-11. The Olympians looked to have another huge play on their hands after stopping the Tide short on 4&1 at midfield, only to have the referees decide the chains would move on the measurement. The Tide didn’t take long to strike when Carabello-Snowell hit Dicello on a screen pass. The receiver did the rest, making one tackler miss and heading to the end zone to push the lead to 21-11. Later in the half, Pottsville tacked on one more score on a Carabello-Snowell QB keeper for a 28-11 final.

Jim Thorpe (5-2) will get another chance at a Pottsville school next when Pottsville Nativity comes to town. Pottsville (6-1) will host Blue Mountain.
